Presents for teen - that doesn't have a screen...!

DD is 14. She has a reasonably nice phone - new contract out 6 months or so ago. She got a Kindle Fire last Christmas. We have a family TV, an iPad and a family laptop. We also have a 'no screens in bedrooms' rule.

It is her (14th) birthday next week so between now and the end of the year there are birthday and Christmas gifts to consider. I have over the last fee years worked hard at reduced the amount of gifts my four DCs all get - partly for coat purposes and partly because our house is already full of shite a bit cluttered. For the last few years she has had a nice pair of boots for Christmas - they last her the year. But I'm stumped for other bits and bobs that are not more gadgets and screens that we (clearly - see above!) don't need. So is she - can't think what she wants...!

What are you getting your teens, that do not involve screens?! TIA. MPD

Books (theres loads of great teen fiction)
Magazine subscription
Clothes, perfume, jewellery
Something sporty (like a Go Ape day)

chocoluvva · 25/09/2013 09:22

Would she like something nice for her room perhaps? Eg a large mirror, picture, pretty storage boxes/baskets/magazine files, new curtains, bedding/rug. RugGiant bean bag (probably too big?)

Or a good quality bag - brightly coloured leather school-style bags are popular at the moment I think.

A 'cosy set' - onesie, nice slipper boots, dressing-gown, fluffy socks/ankle-warmers, large mug just for her,+ hot-water bottle with a nice cover.

Very nice piece of jewellery.

Bicycle.

chocoluvva · 25/09/2013 09:24

To continue 2cats theme - paintball day for her + friends?

Tickets to a musical/pop/rock group.

Agnesboo · 25/09/2013 09:25

Wreck this journal.
Someone said they are in the bogof at WH smiths too.

Onesie
Books
A hairdressers gift voucher
Perfume

ErrolTheDragon · 25/09/2013 09:34

Sweatshirt/t-shirt/other item from Café Press with something she'll love on it. (for my DD it will be dachshunds or something related to windsurfing.)

I still have to get her a cuddly toy each year - its a tradition - but this year I think it's going to be an aardvark rather than the usual dog. Possibly not all teens would appreciate this one! Grin

onsie or pjs, needs a new dressing gown. Socks, accessorise often do nice fun ones (and good for other bits and bobs). Trawl of a poundshop or two - there's often some random thing that's useful/fun.

Comfies...ie onesie, boot slippers etc.
Perfume, set of lipgloss and nail varnish etc.
Tickets to a show of somekind?
Take her for a day out for her birthday...nice "grown up" meal and a show or cinema afterwards?
Some great book sets at the mo.
A journal. Proper leather bound one maybe?
Does a camera count as something with a screen?
Vouchers for her fav clothes shop.
Nice scarf hat set.
Jewellery. Earings if she has her ears pierced.
My mum used to make me up a hamper at that age with little bits of everything in. I felt really grown up with some nice body lotions, moisturiser, smellies etc :)

TheWoollybacksWife · 25/09/2013 09:47

Sweater (possibly Xmas themed)
iTunes voucher

Ooh good thread. I am in similar situation regarding teen dd, an Oct birthday then Christmas.

She never seems to actually want much either nor does she ask for anythingConfused She has an iPod and is happy with it and the phone she has; doesn't want an upgrade.

Ideas I have for her birthday are a sewing machine (she's into textiles and art), perfume, leather and silver bracelet, onesies, things for her room ie a pretty mirror or picture (the Range or Ikea good for both), bean bag, headphones, boots, leather or good bag always goes down well, I was toying with the idea of getting her a facial or beauty treatment.

I bought her loads of nail pens one year which went down well. Last Christmas one little thing I bought from Ebay which she and dd2 liked was an earring holder in the shape of their names.

I see I've said many things already suggested!

IceCreamForCrow · 25/09/2013 10:06

Ooh and a veery long string of flower fairy lights. They look lovely.

She's always wanted a beaded curtain too but I can't for the life of me see how it'd work round the door she has.

Theas18 · 25/09/2013 10:12

Bookmarking as I have this coming up at Xmas!

Just solved DS Xmas/18th with a years membership of the local uni gym/sports centre . He tried out ( very local) council gym but they were really sniffy about an unaccompanied teen at times and he was I think a little perturbed but the rather " steroid pumped" (in his words) guys that were always hanging around , seemingly just watching everyone else!

I have small gifts planned- starbucks cards for instance go down well. Xmas brings the usual new pants/socks/novelty t shirt /book/chocs/toiletries etc

Nice black leather boots are what the girls like for Xmas it is true.

I tend to concentrate on consumables though - we , like you have enough mugs etc!

IceCreamForCrow · 25/09/2013 10:24

Some very nice leather (or good faux leather) jackets about atm. Just bought one for dd2 which is pink.

IceCreamForCrow · 25/09/2013 11:09

Or a big sparkly chandelier for the bedroom.

Sorry I keep thinking of thingsGrin

Whereisegg · 25/09/2013 19:32

Room makeover, trip to a posh hairdresser, manicure, concert tickets, cinema voucher, London show?

RhondaJean · 25/09/2013 19:41

A good Bluetooth speaker for her room?

Bose and beats are both doing some fabulous ones.

SummerHoliDidi · 25/09/2013 19:49

I'm taking dd1 to London for a couple of days for her 14th birthday at half term.

For Christmas she will get manga books and some anime DVDs. Then probably some jewellery and cash. She's really hard to buy for.

feckawwf · 25/09/2013 20:00

Pandora bracelet?
My 14yr old is just obsessed with clothing, new vans, converses, etc are top of the Xmas list this year-things that I don't normally buy through the year as they are too expensive

misspollysdolly · 25/09/2013 22:14

Ooh yay! Thanks everyone! Wrote my post on the bus to work and now I get home to find all your lovely replies - Brillo pads! Some lovely ideas - quite a few if which will definitely feature!

I forgot to say that over the last couple of years - in an attempt to not only limit the cost of Christmas/birthday present but limit the amount of crap being accumulated in our house(!) - we have given each child four presents (either single presents or a parcel with a few bits and bobs within). I saw a (cheesy, but sensible) poem/idea on Pinterest a couple of years back and therefore base our present-buying on the following: (Brace yourself, get the sick bucket, cheese moment follow herewith...)
'Something you want, Something you need, Something to wear, Something to read.' - cheesiness aside, this makes so much sense to me and has helped me enormously to focus and limit what they all get.

This year DD1 doesn't know what she 'wants' - for birthday or Christmas. The other 'Somethings' are mostly done/considered/bought for. But the 'want' requests are tricky when they don't really know what they want and they know that - thankfully - there is little that they are truly in need of...!

Thanks for the ideas - do keep them coming! MPD
