I'm tempted to get this for DS1 this year, he's 3.6 but was wondering if it was a good age to do it & whether it starts off all lovely & then becomes a chore?

Anyone have it as a tradition in their house, or bought it with good intentions and regretted it?

I bought it a couple of months ago so it will be our first year. Dd will be 8 and ds 3.4.

I need to get dh more excited about it but I can't wait. Smile

Sorry it's a bit lazy just to post a link but this explains it better than I can!

Actually that link is a bit shit! Basically you get a book & an elf who has come from the North Pole to check you've been good & you hide the elf around the house (I think).

We got one last year when dd was a year old (dec birthday). She obviously didn't get it but DH and I had lots of fun.

Ours is called Ernie and he's The Elf On The Shelf Who Arrives on the Twelth so that we can get dd's birthday sorted before Christmas starts.

I think she'll love it this year!

GoofyIsACow · 22/09/2013 13:44

I have heard of this a lot, i think DS would love it and like bossing baby ds's about because of the elf watching!

So you get an elf, he sits on the shelf, you move him around the house so he is keeping an eye on them? Is that all?

Some ideas from last years thread

Littlemousewithcloggson · 22/09/2013 13:58

Started it last year with my 2 then 3 and 4. Was such a sucess am doing it again this year. To make it easier he alternated between just hiding and doing something. On weekens, or rainy forecast days he bought them an sctivity to do - christmas baking etc. Definitely a tradition in our house now, dds still talk about it.

LadyGoodman · 22/09/2013 14:03

I must lack imagination as just read last years thread and just don't get it ?????

JerseySpud · 22/09/2013 16:55

No. It is evil and steals your soul.

MadeOfStarDust · 22/09/2013 20:21

It is from a "noughties" story book - nothing traditionl about him... and scares the heck out of some kids - if they touch him the magic of Christmas disappears....

We are Elfers and we all really enjoy it. Even DP, who thinks I am Christmas bonkers about most things, gets into the spirit of things and helps me come up with places to move the Elf to every night. Ours arrives on December 1st and brings the advent calendars. Our DCs are aged 6 and 4 and this will be our 3rd year. We play down the whole 'the Elf is watching you' aspect of it and they are allowed to touch him (it's hilarious to watch how gentle they are with him!). It's basically just a bit of fun. He moves every night and they spend every morning before breakfast giggling and looking for him. Occasionally he will bring something small - last year he brought Christmas colouring, the NSPCC Santa letter, one of those growing snowmen. This evening I have been busy Ebaying miniature Christmas decorations for the dolls house (yes, I know) and one night he will decorate that...
