Do any of you have any idea how much turkey to get for me, OH and DD (18 months)?

I'd just go with a turkey crown tbh. Unless you want lots of leftovers?

cheekycherryza · 17/09/2013 08:21

crown would be perfect

MrsBennetsEldest · 17/09/2013 08:29

Well it would all depend on the size of crown !!!

OP needs to know how big a bird/ crown to buy. I think I would go for a really lovely, organic Chicken, ask your butcher. Turkeys from a supermarket are not brilliant IMO.

Or try a goose....delish.

Thanks MrsBennetsEldest - I've never actually cooked a turkey for anyone before so I have no idea how much I'd need. I think I will do what you suggest and ask the butcher :) he had some lovely looking turkey breasts in last time I went down (actually they were quarter breasts) so I will ask him.

You could try a piece of turkey from M&S, they come in a foil tray with stuffing and bacon, instructions are on the package. I have used them in the past when it was just me and DP, they are great for just a few people.

We've done an M&S turkey breast for fast thanksgiving dinners for DH, dd, au pair and I the past couple of years- perfect amount with 1 lunch sambo leftover.

When it's the Christmas bird though, I go for a smallish whole bird, for bones for stock, leftover sambos and a curry, and freeze enough for another 1 or 2 dinners (DH glutton for cold leftovers for brekkie, so we use it up easily).

A nice turkey curry, turkey and mushrooms with cream and wine sauce, or turkey in gravy pie are great leftover types meals to produce in late jan on miserable nights!!
