Thinking of having a short break away to a Christmas Market. Any suggestions on the best place to go?

My Mum goes to Brugge every year and says it's very nice, but that it's mostly things to buy and eat there at the market.

She did come home with a very expensive glass Christmas bowl one year. But she struggles to find actual gifts. They have a C&A store there though, which made her very happy when she found it.

Last year my husband and I (with our 8month old daughter!) did Christmas markets in cologne and rudesheim. Not convinced on spelling of that btw. Anyhow it was great!!! We went with a company called Treyn and they sort out everything and it was a real bargain- they arrange everything and just tell you where you need to be when. Hotel was nice and all you can eat breakfast and dinner. AND we got almost all the Christmas presents for the family. I would definitely recommend looking into them. I want to go again.

Have been to markets in Cologne and Dusseldorf, v pretty and atmospheric. Berlin has about 6 markets, v busy but great fun. Gluhwein and curry wurst, yum! :)

Cologne! big enough without being too big and Very Pretty, It is a lovely place to go for Christmas. Apart from the tiny local ones which really are my favourite Christmas markets (from living in N Germany), Cologne is the nicest I've been to. A good mix of enough stalls without being full of tat.

It is also fairly close to the UK to drive there, handy if you want to buy a lot. We went on the chunnel, stayed in Calais and were in Cologne just after lunch, Two nights in cologne and then home.
If you're in your own car go to the supermarket and buy the cartons of Gluhwein, 99c ish in Lidl in Germany, £4.99 here in the UK!!!! exactly the same stuff.

It was all on the train which was hard work with the baby but nice for the views and things. I am going to try and do it again but get a babysitter next time!
