I have a 12 yr old dd, 9 yr old ds and 6 yr old dd. would like to buy them a set of books each for Christmas.

Was thinking Diary of a wimpy kid for ds.

Any ideas for them? They already have Roald Dahl, David Walliams and the Fairy Books

Sorry if they've already read these but

6 yr old dd - Narnia? Anne of Green Gables? (Very much depends on her reading level/interests...)
9 yr old ds - think Wimpy Kid's a good idea, 9 yr old boy I know also likes Captain Underpants
12 yr old dd - Again, difficult without knowing reading level, but a few possibilities - Northern Lights/ the Dark is Rising series/ Jacqueline Wilson

Assume they've already read Harry Potter? As that would potentially work for all ages.

Thanks, they all have decent reading abilities. The 6 year old reads as well as the 9 yr old, she's quite advanced. The Harry Potter books - no - they don't really like the film

for your ds how about the skulduggery series -first two maybe - by Derek Landy?
Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan is excellent. both my 10 year old ds and my 15 year old dd are reading them at the minuite.
David Walliams writes some funny books - billionaire boy and gangsta granny spring to mind. They might appeal to the 9 year old.
I would second the captain underpants series - totally kids humour.

a great classic is the indian in the cupboard - really fun adventure book. The hobbit might appeal to your 12 year old or your 9 year old.

Also good is the series of unfortunate events books. My ds loved them. The other author my ds likes is Darren Shan - he writes for both younger and teen readers so just check out which group its aimed at maybe.

Eoin Colfers books Artemis Fowl series are great (dh loved them!).

what about classics like 20,000 leagues under the sea? Or for your older child Jane Eyre or little women? the inkheart series by Cornelia Funke springs to mind. Both of mine loved them. beautifully written books.

Would the 12 year old like the hunger games series?

Can you tell we like books in this house?

Inkspell I quite enjoy Captain Underpants too, there are some clever bits in there - the one that springs to mind is explaining the paradox of time travel using a pie.

Lemony Snicket is another great recommendation, sounds like the 6yo might really enjoy those. Though there are heaps so if you wanted to buy the whole set it could add up...maybe first 5 or 6?

And YY to Hunger Games - they seem to even appeal to kids that don't like reading.

How about Judy Blume for 12 year old? I used to love those at her age about 100 years ago.

PrincessWellington · 16/09/2013 23:07

I read the hunger games, I enjoyed them

Alex Ryder series is great. Don't be put off if you've seen the film which was truly awful. My DN loved these around 11 years old. The Mr Majeika books are also a huge family favourite. Think we started these around seven years. My 7yr old DS is currently working his way through the Wimpy Kid Diaries and is really loving them.

meandtheboys · 18/09/2013 11:13

My 6 year old DS loves the Horrible histories books and the Lemony snicket series.

No experience of older children sorry! But when I was younger (about 11- 13) I loved 'the Power' series by Jesse Harris.

Mr Gum books are very funny for any age group. A very good reader who likes spooky stuff might enjoy the Skulduggery Pleasant series.
