What age do DCs 'get' Christmas?

DS will be 2yrs and 8 months at Christmas this year. I'm already getting excited about Christmas (just finished making Christmas bunting and a dress for my baby DD - and have planned our menu!) and the icing on the cake will be if he gets it and is excited.
When did your DCs get Christmas, and what can I do to prepare him if that's possible?

DD certainly got it a bit last year at about 2 years 4 months. It was about Santa, Christmas tree and presents. When she got down stairs to her stocking if presents she started pulling them out saying 'one for DD, one for Mummy, one for Daddy'. I guarantee she won't do the same this year.

Ds was coming up for 2 last year. He was excited by the lights etc but that was all. He will be tjree in april and im hoping this year he will be into it :-) my little sister is a year older than ds and last year she lapped it up. Shes already talking about it this year :)

I think every year the kids aged from the age of 2 we said was "the year" but in hindsight I'd say age 4-5 was the best in terms of Santa magic (mine are 8&6 and it gets better each year).

DD definitely started to get it aged 2 (Boxing Day babe). 4-5 was when she started to talk about it beforehand (including asking to go on the Santa steam train again). She will be 8 this year and is now involved in planning stuff with me (not all by a LONG shot - but making sure some things are done - including that I have sent off to book Santa train!!). But while I am not utterly convinced that she still believes in Santa (very very logical aspergers kid who works lots of things out in her head - she left a fact-finding survey for the tooth fairy to fill in the last time a tooth fell out!!), she is really into the magic parts too (so she will plan out what cookies to make for Santa, and that we must go look at the lights on houses lots of nights going home from crèche - but when I bring her into town to enjoy the bustle, it is still magical and exciting too).
