What kind of things do you put in Christmas stockings?

We never had Christmas stockings growing up (huge sacks of presents in the living room instead!) and I'd love to start doing them for my DD's...

I've ordered personalised stockings but is it literally an orange, satsuma and the general sort of crap you get in a party bag?

What do you put in yours and how old are your DC?

DD's stocking always has some sweets/chocolate, and half a fruit bowl (red apple, green apple, the greenest banana Santa can find (DD favourite kind!), mandarin, and something like a peach/kiwi/nectarine). (The fruit harks back to my childhood, when having this fruit, ALL TO YOURSELF, was a major treat in our house - generally we had a large box of golden delicious apples to share so a Granny Smiths (my fav) and all the other types of fruit were a real pleasure!).

Santa always brings at least 1 book - a reading book that he thinks DD would enjoy, and sometimes 2 or a relevant factual book or joke book as well.

There is always something useful - generally nicer than the useful things Mum and Dad would normally buy - so coloured underwear (instead of plain white), socks, hair bobbins, magic flannel, - things like that.

And then a few fun things - which can vary a lot in how many and what over the years. We've had things like craft materials and kits, small jigsaws, little toys (different things like spinning tops, toy race cars, slinky, marbles, those animals that fall down on their elastic when you push up the base, mini-figures, collector cards, small soft toy, playdough, aliens in an egg of slime (no WAY would Mum allow that in the house!), extra furniture for the doll's house or outfit for a doll, McD's or similar kid's meal toys, all sorts).

DD's stocking is roughly 12" tall, so doesn't fit a huge amount into it. But they are a few different types of things that have been in it on each of the past 10 years.

So far this year, I have a mini lego set and a mug with the sailing flags on it (she likes sailing and wants to learn them), I have seen an Oreo pencil case (with a pack of oreos) that I will pick up on my next trip, and she will probably need a new set of bobbins. I will get the fruit at the last minute, and I haven't yet seen a book that she'd love. But there's plenty of time to pick up maybe 2/3 more items and the book.

Come here for ideas as this'll be our first year! Does anyone have ideas what I can get for a 5month old please?

Cococrumble · 01/09/2017 22:42

Iittle - my DD will have just turned one so I'm thinking along the lines of:

"That's not my" book
Tambourine (for my sins)
Baby toothbrush
Bath toys
Bubbles
New sippy cup
Christmas bib
Puppet

You could always put little essentials in? Baby bubble bath, nappy cream, dummies etc? Practical stuff you'll use but will fill up a stocking :)

Little my DD was 3mo last year. From memory I put in a bath book, squirting bath toys (great for chewing!) a bell stick (definitely the favourite) and some things I would have got anyway, like a sweet outfit.

@LittleR1e

DS1 was almost 1 at Christmas, so a chunk older, but he mostly got little bits he would use in the future. Bath toys are a great addition, as well as board books. Perhaps some weaning cutlery?

This year DS2 will be between 2 and 4 weeks old (approx) , but will still have a stocking. He's got a snowman and the snowdog comforter, a little outfit, and a pram toy. I'll probably pop in a couple more bits just for DS1 benefit, perhaps a bath toy, new dummy. Under the tree he will have a book and a special cuddly toy from the big man.

I love doing the kids stockings even though they're hard work! I never had one as a kid as my mum thinks they're a waste of time and money Angry

I've just started picking up a few bits so not much yet but so far I have:

Dd1 (16)
Ravenclaw drinks coaster
Notebook
Harry Potter Snitch fidget spinner

Dd2 (13)
Notepad
Funny bookmark

Ds (10)
Xbox controller thumb grips
Hand putty

Every year they have a tube of sweets and choccie coins. All stockings have to have choccie coins. It's the law.

When we were teenagers my mom stopped putting the usual 'bits and pieces' in our stocking that usually got used or played with just once and then thrown in a toy box and started filling them with just chocolate and sweets.... we loved them.. we'd have loads of those tubs of sweets and coins and knew we'd be cracking those all open for breakfast on Christmas morning!

I've alway have a theme for DDs stocking last year it was Harry Potter, when she was small she's had Dora the Explorer, dinosaurs etc. This year it'll be Japanese Manga.

She gets the standard stuff like chocolate, body spray, a new hairbrush etc. and then 3/4 things that go with the theme, just little things I've found on Amazon or Ebay could be a notebook, pen, hair accessories, jewellery, badges, nothing expensive and not lots of things but things she'll like or useful things.

Love this thread, gave me lots of ideas.
Ds 8 & 10 usually get, character socks, cards, chocolate coins or some other novelty chocolate, bouncy balls (usually confiscated by boxing day,) lynx spray, hair gel.

I've had a few ideas for dd 19 months as she was a bit young last year, hair bubbles and bows, picture cards, bubbles, milky buttons, bath squirties

A poster years ago said that when she was older, her stockings started being themed kits for adult life, so one year it would stuff to make up a sewing kit, and then tools, and cooking utensils etc. I'm keeping that in mind for the future.
