What are you having.

Mine is turkey, beef, pigs in blanket, stuffing, roast potatoes, roast parsnip, broccoli, cauliflower, sprouts, carrots, peas, cabbage and gravey. Followed by Christmas pudding and Brandy sauce.

I have more than one meat as...

A, not everyone I'm feeding likes just one meat, some may dislike t and prefer another.
B, one meat joint isn't going to feed 21 people.
C, and buying 3 turkeys at £60 a pop just isn't on my budget.

I we were just feeding my family (4) it would be one meat. (Probarly turkey), and we'd have sprouts but uncle A, is physically sick at the smell of them.

MrsBW · 23/12/2012 17:19

Mine's quite dull in comparison.

Smoked salmon to start.

Then Venison with port and red currant sauce. Roasties, parsnips, carrots, brocolli, spring cabbage, peas. Sage and onion stuffing as he lubs it.

Then Xmas pud

And a lot of alcohol.

I am in (genuine) awe at how some of you produce the meals you do.

MrsBW · 23/12/2012 17:20

Oh... And sprouts of course!!

cardibach · 23/12/2012 17:20

WE sit at the table for that long. We sit and chat and eat and drink. DOn;t really see why that is different from sitting anywhere else, to be honest. THe meal is the focus of our CHristmas, it's the time we can all sit together. IT's great.

As for putting on weight, we don;t eat snacks all day, or loads of chocolate. I usually put on between 2 and 4 pounds over the two days (we do a big dinner on Boxing Day too) and have lost them again by New Year.

ceres · 23/12/2012 17:22

"I find it really weird to have more than one main meat. And greedy and ridiculous but there we are"

christmas dinner in ireland is turkey and ham.

i would feel very hard done by with just turkey and some little sausages wrapped in bacon.

i was an adult and living in the uk before i realised british people didn't generally have turkey and ham for christmas dinner.

MsElleTow · 23/12/2012 17:22

Blimey, no wonder some people start stressing about Christmas dinner in August!

We have Turkey and all the trimmings. The maddest thing I do is 3 types of stuffings. I couldn't be arsed standing in the kitchen doing 3 meats and 25 different types of vegetables TBH!

bradywasmyfavouritewiseman · 23/12/2012 17:23

brady I'd quite like a meze because we could jog round the block between courses

we could, but we won't Xmas Grin

It saves us having to do tea as well. It won't fnish till 4 or 5.

I get the more than one meat thing. If you have alot of people coming some prefer one to another and one joint won't feed all.

We had traditional dinner one year and had beef and chicken. My dad, dbro and dh love beef. I don't and neither does sil. So everyone got what they wanted.

melliebobs · 23/12/2012 17:23

Chicken that will have onions, garlic n clementines up its jacksi to make some yummie gravy
Roasties
Pigs in blankets
Sprouts fried in garlic n bacon
Honey roasted carrots n parsnips
Home made gravy

Home made Xmas pud (that's steaming at the mo) and custard

AltinkumATEalltheTurkey · 23/12/2012 17:28

Oh I'm not in the kitchen all day tbh.

Tommorrow the farmer will delivery my ready prepared bed (picked fresh today and pealed, washed and ready to cook).

Chutneys i done a few weeks ago, as well as the bread and cranberry and chestnut stuffing, I've already prepared the mixes for the meats, and when they come tommorrow, they will be marinated and put in the fridge till Xmas morning.

I've brought a electric masher, for the tatties, and you're pudding mix dh is doing, to us its no more effort than having 10 round for tea, whichnwendo frequently.

CremeEggThief · 23/12/2012 17:28

This will be mine and DS's first Christmas on our own. We shall have Quorn roast, roast potatoes, roast parsnips, broccoli, carrots, cranberry sauce, red cabbage (M&S), bread sauce (M&S), gravy (Bisto), and stuffing (Jamie Oliver). NO sprouts, as we hate them. Dessert will be M&S Baileys' cheesecake. NO Christmas pudding or cake, as we don't like them.

Supper- cheese board and cheese biscuits, apple and pear chutney (Sainsburys), celery and grapes.

Hope everyone enjoys their meal whatever you are having!

apostrophethesnowman · 23/12/2012 17:30

We're having ham/lentil soup, turkey, honey glazed ham, mashed and roast potatoes, roast parsnips, carrots, brussels sprouts, cranberry sauce, stuffing and pigs in blankets, followed by trifle or chocolate log. (Or fancy ice cream if anyone prefers).

We don't plan as such for the evening. We just see what we fancy (if anything) at night. Often just something like tea and toast, although there's plenty in the fridge/freezer if we want it.

cricketballs · 23/12/2012 17:31

Red onion and goats cheese tarts or prawn cocktail or pate and melba toast

Duck, turkey, roast potatoes, roast parsnips, roast carrots, spiced red cabbage, creamed Savoy cabbage, sprouts, fine green beans, mash potatoes, pugs in blankets, stuffing, gravy, plum sauce and all the other bits

Apple tart tatin or Xmas pud with home made custard or rum sauce

Cheese & crackers

Already started cooking!!

cricketballs · 23/12/2012 17:32

I am feeding all DH's family and my sister as well as us 4 though

bradywasmyfavouritewiseman · 23/12/2012 17:34

Some of these meals sound amazing.

I am a bit jealous. I think we should have a traditional one next year.

We are lucky that we will prep all the food while working tomorrow afternoon. Ready to go in the over on Christmas morning.

nokidshere · 23/12/2012 17:34

We will have:

whatever we want from the fridge - no cooking! Cheese, smoked salmon , eggs, pickles, breads, crackers, salads. Chocolate and mince pies for afters.

Although I have cooked a ham in coke this year "a la nigella" because everyone keeps telling me how good it is :)

Kleftico is one of my all time fave dishes - yummmmmmm - I want the meze ;)

WorraLorraTurkey · 23/12/2012 17:46

SantaisBarredfromhavingStella · 23/12/2012 17:47

Home made lentil soup for starters, going to cook it tomorrow..love the smells!

Main is turkey cooked with citrus butter and a ham roasted with marmalade, roast and mash potatoes, pigs in blankets, honey roasted parsnips, balsamic glazed carrots and sprouts.

Also making the trifle slice thats on the front of the BBC Good food magazine for pudding. Cant wait - of course its overindulgence but any weight on is easily lost and its worth it!

Oh and lots of alcohol to!

RowanTheRedNosedMumsnet · 23/12/2012 20:17

Hello

This one isn't an AIBU, so we've moved it to Christmas.

Ho ho ho.
