Elf dilemma - what would you do?

We have done the 'elf thing' for the 1st time this year with ds (5). However, we have completely ignored the no touching rule and ds is completely taken with the elf. He takes him everywhere he can and cuddles him in bed every night. He has never been like this with any other soft toy. The elf sometimes 'gets up' while ds is asleep and does something a bit cheeky or leaves a treat, but mainly ds just loves having him around and telling everyone he is one of Santa's elves with his own passport.

He has known from the start that the elf has to go back to Santa on Christmas Eve, but he is feeling pretty sad about it. Two weeks ago we had to have our young rescue cat put down and ds was very attached to him. He has taken it very well but misses him, and now I feel rotten that the elf will be going on Christmas Eve.

Am thinking perhaps the elf could have special permission from Santa to stay longer, until ds felt it was ok for him to go home.

Really I think I'm just looking for a bit of reinforcement for having perhaps messed up and allowing such an attachment, and wondering what anyone else would do in the same situation. I have to say it has been so lovely to see how taken ds has been with the whole thing, and how much he is enjoying everything about christmas this year.

Could he stay but his sacrifice to stay is that his magic has been removed?

kes44p · 21/12/2012 20:31

You can buy a soft toy version of the elf, maybe Father Christmas could arrange for your elf to stay a little longer until his replacement arrives?

Ohcrud · 21/12/2012 20:32

Aww I would let him stay and do as misformumnotmaid suggests and say his magic has to go.

spookysal · 21/12/2012 20:34

I wouldn't take him away. Esp. after losing the cat.

I agree with MisForMumNotMaid, I think being granted special permission to stay is a lovely idea and removing the magic power may make him lose interest quicker.

I don't think you need to feel guilty btw. It's nice he is attached to a little friend and you will do harm by making Father Christmas even more special by saying he let him stay just for your ds.

Merry Christmas!

Just let it stay! It's not an actual real elf! You could always get another one for next year as there are four types so you could get a different one if you wanted to.

My dd got fond of a cuddly reindeer last year but forgot about it in about march so I put it away them.

FaresPlease · 21/12/2012 22:05

Oh let him keep the elf!! Life is tough and any little bit of extra joy you come across is worth holding onto (sorry, been thinking about Sandy Hook kids a lot today.....)

DewDr0p · 21/12/2012 22:12

I'm another one who would let him keep it.

Or if you really don't want to, could the elf send your ds a cuddly toy cat to keep him company? (sorry if that feels weird so soon, I have a cat myself so hope this suggestion doesn't offend!)

Ninetyninepercent · 21/12/2012 22:29

Let him keep him. I would even make it 'formal' and get Santa to send a little letter through the door saying that his elf had been given special permission to stay with your DS as he has enjoyed being with him so much! Your elf could still get up to stuff post-christmas as he's your DSs special elf. If you wanted to continue with the Elf on the Shelf next year then you could send another letter from Santa in november next year saying he needed to get back to work - or get another elf!!! Smile

Ninetyninepercent · 21/12/2012 22:31

Oh BTW should mention my 7 yo is currently in bed cuddling our elf as he has been for the past few nights!!! The point is their enjoyment (and yours!), whatever shape that might take that whether that deviates from the 'official' way or not!

If you wanted Santa to write him a letter explaining his extended but lack of magic then here is some lovely Santa headed paper :)

Thanks so much for all the replies. The elf is definitely staying and a letter from Santa will be arriving later today. Ds will be over the moon and I think the elf will continue to get up to stuff every now and then. Absolutely right - in the grand scheme of things a bit of extra happiness is definitely worth hanging on to.

Happy Christmas! X
