I'm attempting a Christmas ham for the first time this year. Any foolproof recipes appreciated! I plan to serve it at a small gathering we're having on Boxing day si I'd like to get it right! Thanks in advance.

Can't really go wrong, i have done it in coke or just water with onion.

Couple of tea spoons of mustard, some honey, marmalade with ginger ( half jar)
Smother ham

Bake.

I find the less fuss the better with ham, its very forgiving. Usually boil christmas eve and bake christmas eve after marinaded.

steppemum you need a gammon and if you want it for two meals and sandwiches (is that right?) for 7 I would think you would maybe need about 4kg or more. You can always freeze leftovers so probably better to overestimated rather than under.

thanks ginger, that was just what I was looking for. Need to go out early this morning, before it gets manic

(you saved me phoning my dad with yet another, how do you do this standard chriistmas dish request Grin - in my defence we did christmas overseas for 10 years and this is the first one where it is at my house and I have to do it The Proper Way as parents will be there...)

so - I have a lovley looking gammon joint, and a slow cooker which I never use so how do I calculate cooking time in the slow cooker, and do I need to soak it overnight in cold water first (I know my dad always did this, so I assumed I had to but who knows!!)

I want to cook it and then honey roast it - does that sound right?

steppemum · 22/12/2012 22:33

so anyone do I need to soak this gammon joint tonight? or just cook it tomorrow?

frazzled74 · 22/12/2012 23:01

would you cook this and reheat or cook and eat cold? how many days will it be ok for if i cook it christmas eve?

steppemum · 22/12/2012 23:37

eat it cold. Or eat it hot on the day you cook it and then eat it cold. I will cook mine tomorrow and expect it to last to next weekend

TodaysAGoodDay · 23/12/2012 00:12

Instead of apple juice, try it cooked in cider - delish.

wheredidiputchristmas · 23/12/2012 08:29

If you think you are not going eat it all you freeze it. Freeze in 6 or 8 slices so you can in sandwiches later.
