I was stumped for my parents too. They are in their 70s, no hobbies, don't really want anything and as money is tight for me I know they don't want me to get anything special for them.

I ended up getting something from the UNICEF website - you can get for example 100 polio vaccines for £11 or story books for a child for £12. I had to get them something from me and from my son, and spent just over £20 on school Supplies and milk.

I know they will be happy with this, and it feels better than buying £20 worth of tat , which is what they would've got! UNICEF send a card with a message telling them what their present is. Touch and go if it gets there in time- I only bought mine today and they are sending first class post.

Would they enjoy Kiva credit?

A voucher for afternoon tea at a nice hotel?

maxybrown · 20/12/2012 19:27

Thanks for all of the suggestions. Some just not theistthing at all and some I don't think £40 would stretch to Sad

The afternoon tea thing would be good but am stumped as where to find anything like that? They do not own a car and we live in a big city where evrything is a bit bar and club
They love a certain restaurant (and only go for very special treats/times) and was going to do something like vouchers for that but the restaurant don't do them argh

Make them an IOU type voucher for that restaurant?

Helenagrace · 20/12/2012 20:05

maxy do you have any nice hotels? They often do afternoon tea. Even chain hotels like Marriotts usually do them.

Afternoon tea is my favourite thing.

ChristmasFairyLights · 20/12/2012 20:06

How about a magazine subscription? Even if they don't have a hobby one of the travel ones might be interesting? Or a cooking one?

And i think it's nice because it's a reminder every month that you love them! (possibly I am too soppy). Anyway, someone bought me one a couple of years ago and I loved it because magazines are fun but too expensive for me at the time to justify for myself.

eatyourveg · 21/12/2012 07:59

Why don't you find a nice afternoon tea place and go in and ask them if you can pre-pay and book a particular date. I doubt they'd give you a voucher as such but they may give you some sort of receipt which would act as proof of payment.

Thanks everyone - magaizine subscription good yes but done it before!

Managed to get them tickets for something now - hoorah! Thanks everyone
