What can I buy DD as an annual Christmas present?

This will be DD's first Christmas and I kinda have the feeling I'd like to start a tradition - buy her something which I'll buy a different version of each year and give to her when she's 18 (at the back of my mind, I was thinking glass Christmas tree decorations, but I can't see them lasting one Christmas let alone years). Any suggestions? Hmmm, I just thought that maybe a nice bottle of vintage champagne bought each year...although the chances of those lasting years is pretty slim too! A gold sovereign from each year (although don't know how much they cost)?

Charm bracelet? I've done this for my goddaughter

FriedSprout · 16/12/2012 23:07

How about getting her a charm bracelet and getting her a charm each year that reflects her current interests?

FriedSprout · 16/12/2012 23:08

Great minds Grin

A newspaper from the day they were born? Although that may be better for birthdays. Do newspapers come out on Christmas Day?
Definitely think a charm sounds good.

crazygracieuk · 17/12/2012 13:46

A CD or DVD?

SweetMingePie · 17/12/2012 13:55

Why not a tree decoration every year, and then when she moves out in 18+ years she can take the decorations with her for her first Christmas tree in her new home?

3ForMe · 17/12/2012 14:18

I second the Swarovski tree decoration. We get the annual one every year but there's some gorgeous cheaper ones.

Out dc get new pj's and toothbrush Christmas Eve. And a 'delivery' through the post of a new book. (With air mail stickers, fancy stamp, fancy writing)

BeaWheesht · 17/12/2012 15:06

We give each of ours a Christmas decoration each year then they can take them with them when they're grown up.

We buy wooden / felt / handmade decorations as opposed o glass though

I once read about someone who received a piece of expensive dinner service every year so had a full set of beautiful china as an adult. I'd just be afraid it'd be taken out of circulation before I'd completed it!

When DH and I got married we agreed to buy a bottle of vintage or just expensive wine, champagne or port every anniversary and store them away for a fab silver wedding weekend away with what will be our then grown up family. We spend between £30 and £100 and have enjoyed buying them together.

Single pearl (for birthday too), then get them strung as she enters adulthood.

kiwigirl42 · 18/12/2012 09:24

I buy DS a christmas decoration every year. They are not expensive ones, just quirky and meaningful. This years is a teasel hamster (his hamster died recently and is greatly mourned for) which he adores. I love getting them out every year. As he is now 13, he couldn't care less if he tried but hoping that he will show an interest again when an adult!

A snowglobe
Something charitable (mozzie nets eg) that as she gets older she can choose - then keep the cards

I saw something on the net once where a lady bought a giant glass jar/vase and she added little bits and bobs over the years that her son outgrew (dummies eg) or left in his.pockets (cinema stubs, army men) or she found under the couch (a baby sock, play cars) and she gave it to him when he married and they all spent ages looking at it.reminiscing over the years.
