Fur real animals

Ds1 has just turned 5 and the only consistent thing he keeps asking for is for one of those bloomin fur real pets. He's seen and advert and saying there is one that you kiss or stroke and it walks or does something?

DH has already got him a little scalectrix, so I'd rather spend not loads on this animal, but there seems to be quite a few online.

Does anyone have a child who has one? Either positive or negative thoughts really appreciated. Thank you

We've got a little cat which ds does love and play with but they don't really do a lot. If you can find them on sale and it's what he really, really wants then do it. It's the kind of thing I would have loved as a kid but it doesn't really stand up to the more interesting toys about now.

sheeplikessleep · 15/12/2012 19:50

I know I've left it really late, I see Argos and the entertainer sell a few. I was sort of hoping that ds1 would have gone off the idea. You never know, maybe ill stand corrected and be after one myself Wink

Rogue, thanks for posting. I sort of got the impression, from reading the online reviews, that they don't do a lot. Clever advertising, as I think ds1 would like a real dog really and thinks this will be the next best thing!

I think I'll go for one of the 20 quid ones, then I won't feel so bad if it is a 5 minute wonder!

Thanks for posting, appreciated

DD has one. She got it for last christmas, aged 5.5. She was completely in love with it for about a month. And now, it sits forlorn on her bookcase with her other zillion stuffed animals.

It does not do very much really, and, if you don't turn it off at night, it whimpers. Annoying.

PavlovtheCat · 15/12/2012 20:00

I mean, don't get me wrong, DD loved it to bits when she first got it, and still plays with it on occasion, but no more than the 50p cheap version rabbit we bought from a carboot sale before this, or any of her other stuffed toys.

I guess, if he really wants it and you are happy for ultimate smiley face to be the reward, rather than a fab toy with endless amusement, it is worth it. Just don't expect it to engage him for long.

sheeplikessleep · 15/12/2012 20:01

Pavlov, can I ask which one? Was it one of the £60 ish ones?

Guess my other concern is that will one of the 20-30 quid ones do much?

The reality is he will spend all of Xmas day on his scalectrix Grin

That sounds like a plan! I was hoping my eldest ds would forget about something on his list that looks rubbish like a waste of money but seeing as it is still being pointed out to me in every shop we see it in I have given in too! sometimes it's just what they want and nothing else will do! Grin

sheeplikessleep · 15/12/2012 20:04

I know rogue, I'll get him one, I just hope the cheap end one will still result in ultimate grin from him. Thanks for posting

sheep it was £39.99 from Toys r Us, like a week before christmas, 'half-price' Grin yeah right! It is quite a big one. The legs move, it barks, turns it's head, whimpers, makes panting noises, opens and closes it's mouth. I think that is about it. I thought it walked, but it does not. My friend has one for her little one that actually walks along the floor. Not sure if it is a fur real, just a super expensive one, or something else, but it does walk properly.

PavlovtheCat · 15/12/2012 20:21

oh, just amazon'd it, the one DD has is 'cookie' there is one that 'walks' which is probably the one my friend has for her little one. If that is the one, it is ok actually.

Shattereddreams · 15/12/2012 20:46

I've been dragged into this by DD. the butterscotch pony has been on every tv ad we don't even have ruddy sky all week.
I ordered it from amazon today for £60.
Have I been mugged off?

Will she love it?

Shattereddreams · 15/12/2012 20:47

strike through fail

sheeplikessleep · 15/12/2012 21:24

We've bitten the bullet and gone for the Fur real bouncy my happy to see me pup. I think that's the one in the advert that ds1 has seen, where you can kiss it and it jumps around. Horrific really Grin

Dd was adamant she wanted LuLu for about 6 months last year. So very excited we got her LuLu.
By the afternoon she was saying "shut up LuLu"
Hasn't really bothered with it much since last Chistmas. Much better now batteries hav run out.

PavlovtheCat · 15/12/2012 21:29

shattered oh it's so hard at this age I think, because the things they ultimately play with time and time again are not always the things they think they want. Well that is for my DD anyway. Yet, if I bought those things she does not realise she wants, she would be less happy than if I bought the things she thinks she wants, but stops playing with shortly after. So it's a tough balance between keeping them happy on the 'day' and keeping them happy in the long term and getting value for money. Does that even make any sense? For example, I bought DD a squillion sylvanian family animals with a house on ebay and she liked it, but not as much as some of the Hellow Kitty stuff she was bought by other people. I was crushed. However, in the last year, she plays with her dolls house and her little animals endlessly, she packs them in a little bag, they go everywhere with her, and I often have to take them off her at 9pm as she has snuck them into bed. However, if you were to ask her for her christmas list right now, they would not be on it.

So, yes, you may have been mugged, but she will very likely love it initially, so that might make it worth it. Depending on how you view such presents.

Pizzaexpress2 · 15/12/2012 21:30

Oh. Argos hav got Fureal Pets on special in today's newspaper supplement.

Shattereddreams · 15/12/2012 21:31

Perfect analogy.
Seeing as I didn't pay £100 I am going to grimace and bear it

CherryTheRedNosedReindeer · 16/12/2012 00:11

my girls have them. dd1 has zambi the elephant, it walks and makes noises and waves its trunk around a bit. she has forgotten about it, she had it 2 years ago. dd2 has lulu the cat, she also had it 2 years ago. it doesnt do tons, but she still adores it.

Floralnomad · 16/12/2012 00:17

We had the pony when it was first out and bloody expensive! I think I was the only one who touched it after Christmas Day ,eventually I sold it about 3 years later on ebay for a very good price ,we still however have 2 of the parrots and apparently they have to stay because they're like family ,even though they just sit gathering dust.

TenPercenter · 18/12/2012 00:53

I think you know if your child will be really upset if they don't get it (they are a big pile of bony, weird, annoying shite though). I have done 10 child filled Christmases now and have a finely tuned tat radar, I refuse now to buy flimsy and/or pointless tat, furreal falls into the latter, dd had the lulu cat, was looked at once and ignored. Don't blame her, feels like a bag of bones and does a weird rotational movement every now and again.

I think my dc's actually know not even to ask for it now Grin. I don't care if it is their little hearts desire, if it is not robust, or fun, or useful I am not spending money on it, wasted too much on cheap disposable crap which gets ignored in the past.
