Science Museum Fingerprint set or Potato Clock for 9 yr old?

I remember when I was about 12 we were burgled and when the forensic officer came around with his metal suitcase, powder and little dusting brush I was in awe. More so when he then showed me a fingerprint from my jewelry box that he thought might belong to the burglar, but turned out to be mine and he showed me how he could tell (a wapping great scar across the thumb pad!) I longed for a kit such as this and vowed to become a forensic detective myself because of it (not quite made it, but in a criminal based role!).

So, I would love to buy this for my nephew as I would like it myself! He is 9.5yrs old and currently interested in all things science, so my SIL informs me. Is he too young for this or would he potentially get himself all excited by this as I might have at 12?

The alternative is, as he is interested in science, he might like the science museum potato clock, which will intrigue him, but, maybe won't last so long before he got bored, or would it? Would this be good for his age? worth it?

Or. Any similar alternatives of a similar price range would be great (£10-15) that can be bought on amazon, play.com or other deliverable company (we live at completely opposite ends of the country!).

I got the potato clock for £8 ish at mulberry bush.
For a science geek 8 yr old.

shattered for this xmas? or does he/she have it now? if so did they like it? It is on amazon for £8 also, with free delivery. If I get this, will get him a little something to go with it.

My 10 yr old would definitely like either of those. If you were getting the potato clock from Amazon and wanted a little extra, he recently got a set of rattle magnets and is obsessed with them. Two sets have kept him amused for hours.

My DD got the potato clock from a friend for her ninth birthday. Fun putting it together but then forgotten very quickly. Now lying in pieces 2 weeks later.

ok, I have decided. As I am reminiscing myself, I feel it only right and proper to get him the finger printing set, and maybe send a card with a little explanation of why I bought it. Then, it is not just a present, but one with a little meaning. He might of course not give a toss, being only 9, but his daddy (my brother) might or might not either.

And, someone else mentioned on another thread about the inkoo bears, so, for my two nieces, I have bought the mini ones of those! Only problem is, DD now wants one!

I bought the forensic set! And, I bought another one for another relative too! I am tempted to buy one for myself...

I like the sound of the fingerprint set Pavlov. I remember my brother having something similar when he was about 8 or 9 (30+ years ago!).

BTW - what are the rattle magnets? I've looked at the link and I still don't understand

DoubleMum · 17/12/2012 21:21

Rattle magnets are strong torpedo shape magnets which make a crashing noise when coming together. Very simple but boys just seem to love 'em - DD got some at the same time and is so uninterested she appears to have donated them to her brother, which DOESN'T happen very often.
Might get that forensic set for DS's birthday in Jan, sounds good.

PavlovtheCat · 17/12/2012 21:36

double if I buy myself one I will let you know if it was good!

My son's have had two fingerprint sets - both are still sealed in the boxes despite them both being interested in science.

PavlovtheCat · 17/12/2012 23:23

amck oh send em to me Grin

Pavlov- if I had any idea where they were at this precise moment you would be welcome to them - I suspect they wont be rooted out until I do my next trawl for ebay in the new year.

OK will wait for feedback, LOL!
