Im not doing Christmas dinner at my house this year (MIL's house) but having folks for Boxing Day lunch (sorted) and on the 27th (sorted). Don't really want to shop again till New Years eve. So what do I feed my DH and 2DD and myself for the rest of the time? Daft question really cos I manage the rest of the year, but always get stuck in festive season. :)

We will still have visitors at home so I revert to simple winter dishes, but tart them up a little: Sausages & mash using extra-nice sausages, Venison Stew... Generally things that don't need much work or elaborate ingredients because I'll be cooked out from Christmas even onwards....

Good old stews! My mind goes so blank sometimes!

I did a massive potato dauphinois last year which lasted a couple of meals and was nice with chutneys pickles and cold ham and the like.

There is always turkey curry Grin

Xmas Smile And you can make them now and bung in the freezer too! Or use the slow cooker, my favourite low-effort helper!

I am planning the following for the days after Xmas:

Carbonara with left over ham.
Turkey Curry, with chutney, Nan etc
Ham and lentil soup.
Turkey, ham and cranberry pie.

Thank you,
Will add tagliatelle to my shopping list!

jojane · 12/12/2012 12:34

I would have one freezer meal at least that just requires bunging in oven or slow cooker
We generally just eat left overs and left overs for a few days just with a pizza or jacket spud or pasta bake thrown in

We're always quite glad of some "normal" food in between the excesses of Christmas and New Year lol. Something a bit simpler and maybe spicy to reawaken your taste buds!

Are you likely to have leftovers from Boxing Day/27th? Maybe work from there.

OrangeforDd · 12/12/2012 12:59

Thanks Midnightinmoscow. Turkey ham and cranberry pie sounds perfect for our family get together!!

ChristmasCountdown · 12/12/2012 13:40

We've got curry, Bolognese and beef and Guinness stew in the freezer for the Christmas period - nice proper comfort food for cold days and perfect to eat after lazy afternoons watching Christmas films while munching chocolates

We have egg and chips on boxing day.

It's tradition Grin

SnowProbs · 12/12/2012 13:44

I get sick of Christmas food by the 27th, so go for Thai or Indian curries, stir fries etc.

PickledInAPearTree · 12/12/2012 14:15

Mmmm chips. My mum and nan do home made chips with leftover turkey or ham and egg on Boxing Day, bloody lovely.

Thanks folks for all your ideas.

Going to make a big casserole this weekend - 1/2 for this weekend and 1/2 for festive in-between days. Will do chicken or turkey and chips with salady stuff. Lots of soups, bread and cheese. And have ordered a steak pie with my christmas butcher order. Oh and ham, eggs and chips. :)

HECTheHallsWithRowsAndFolly - Love that tradition! May steal it Grin How did it start?

We mainly eat leftovers converted in to different foods. Mainly because I refuse to enter a shop.

HECTheHallsWithRowsAndFolly · 13/12/2012 05:53

It started many, many years ago, Grin . So much pigging out on christmas eve and christmas day that we just wanted something really plain and down to earth on boxing day! And it's stuck.

And it is the nicest egg and chips you will have all year. I promise you.
