Wrong size present dilemma

My DSIL lives far away from us and is coming to say at Christmas. My DH (her brother), was recently visiting her and offered to bring back Christmas presents so she didn't have to bring them on the plane, which she was agreeable to. During the course of a conversation DSIL said that my DD's present was a coat, size 2-3 years. Thing is my DD has been wearing 3 year old items for a while now.

When DH came home with the presents I (carefully) opened DD's, (the first time I have ever done this!)' and the coat is definitely too small.

DH thinks that we should not say anything but I am worried that DSIL will feel bad on Christmas Day. But equally I don't want her to think I was checking up on her gift (yes, I know I was but it was with the best of intentions).

Any ideas on the best way to handle this?

I'm with your dh. Just exchange after Christmas Day.

Why not just call her and say 'DH mentioned that ^ - unfortunately DD is growing like a weed!! I'd hate for her not to get much wear out of it, would it be possible to exchange it for a bigger size'. I don't see the problem?

I have opened parcels that felt like clothes, DD1 was a bit plump when she was 9-10 and it was easier to exchange or replace things than have her open things that didn't fit.

Clothes always came from the same aunt who we rarely see.

DD2 who is a rake has done very well out of it she is still wearing a beautiful crew top, that never fitted her sister and I had no where to swap.

We have some of the same shops but not all. I had a look at the label but unfortunately couldn't tell where it was from. Me doing a sneaky return is not an option.
