If you have them at all that is!

Prawn cocktail. Always. Family tradition!

TheElfOnThePanopticon · 06/12/2012 18:55

Proper Irish wheaten bread, butter, smoked salmon, lemons.

TheReturnOfBridezilla · 06/12/2012 18:55

I'm having members of DH's family I have never met for Christmas dinner so feel I need to do starters. Am thinking something safe and unimaginative like parma ham and melon or just a bit of pate and nice bread or just raiding M&S's canapé section really.

SauvignonBlanche · 06/12/2012 18:56

Smoked salmon

BunnyLebowski · 06/12/2012 18:56

Prawn cocktail with smoked salmon and homemade wheaten on the side.

Deelish Grin

SantaWearsGreen · 06/12/2012 19:05

Homemade mushroom soup&fresh baguette Xmas Grin

Gimblinginthewabe · 06/12/2012 19:09

We always have prawn cocktail, its DH's tradition. I would probably do smoked salmon or pate if it was up to me. (We are having salmon for breakfast instead)

DoubleMum · 06/12/2012 19:14

Nothing, we're far too full anyway. But the one time we did, it was prawn cocktail, and if I did again it would also be prawn cocktail with big huge juicy prawns.

My DM makes this thing which is known in our house as prawny starter. Prawns, cream, salt, pepper, nutmeg in a ramekin and grated strong cheddar on top. In the oven til the cheese is melted & crispy. We only ever eat it on Xmas day, and it is delicious Grin

ilovemydogandMrObama · 06/12/2012 19:20

potted crab on toast.

LittlemissChristmas · 06/12/2012 19:20

We normally have something light like melon or prawns.

PinkFairyTaleOfNewYork · 06/12/2012 19:23

We always have melon, pâté, prawn cocktail and lentil soup! I always have the melon or the soup.

ChestyNutsRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 06/12/2012 19:27

WhoKnowsWhereTheMistletoes · 06/12/2012 19:30

Never have anything, main course is enough. Pudding is only eaten as a token gesture as well, half of us don't like Christmas pud anyway. I am thinking about doing some canapes as nibbles around midday and a later dinner this year though.

AlohaMama · 06/12/2012 19:31

Because we tend to have Christmas Dinner later in the afternoon, we usually do canapes at lunchtime as a kind of early starter, and then no starter when we sit down for Christmas dinner itself. Canapes include crostini with blue cheese/brie & grapes, pear & stilton, cream cheese & salmon spirals, etc etc.

CardiffUniversityNetballTeam · 06/12/2012 19:34

I think we are having some posh pâté this year.

Smoked salmon rolled with rocket and watercress parmesan and pine nuts, good dash of lemon. You lay the salmon out all the other stuff on top, roll it up like a swiss roll then leave in clingfim in the fridge until ready to cut with (very) sharp knife. You can make early and leave and causes no hassle. Not too heavy.

Doilooklikeatourist · 06/12/2012 19:38

A big big big big glass of white wine , hopefully Chablis .

oldsilver · 06/12/2012 19:42

Chocolates, cheeselets, some mixed nuts and raisins, a few shell nuts and a satsuma or two for good measure Xmas Grin and I shall be having tasters from the turkey dinner et al allllllllllll morning too

shesariver · 06/12/2012 19:50

Always home made lentil soup, family tradition.

YuletideDollie · 07/12/2012 13:37

We have a choice of: cream of vegetable soup, prawn cocktail or pâté and toast. Ill be grumbling into my prawn cocktail/soup this year as am pregnant and not allowed a beautiful smothering of pâté on a chunk of crunchy toast drool! Sad

Katienana · 07/12/2012 14:39

We,have m&s salmon mousse served with extra smoked salmon and extra prawns. Soooo nice!

TeaOneSugar · 07/12/2012 19:20

Broccoli & Stilton Soup with Ciabatta croutons, DD's favourite.
