We got some lego for my dd for her 5th birthday - she found it fiddly and tbh I ended up building most of it which was fine by me I figured she would probably grow into it, whereas duplo wouldn't last long.. they're kinda inbetween at 5.

that's what i thought but she is desperate for some sort of building bricks so im a bit stumped :(

I don't think she is too young for building blocks I am getting a set for my DD who is 4.3 yrs, she plays with them all the time at pre-school.

A lot of the sets I looked at were aimed at 3yrs and up so not babyish.

This is a lovely play set which is also building blocks

I wanted to get it for DD but decided to go with some classic blocks instead so she can building anything. I got her...

these large ones

and a smaller set which can be used with the bigger ones

Or if you wanted to get a really special set that is also more girlie there are these (which I plan to get for my younger DD's birthday)

DS got lego for his 4th birthday, and is getting a bucketload more for Christmas (he's 5 in January). He loves it, and loves being creative and building all sorts of things, not just the things advertised on the front of the box. This weekend just gone, he spent approximately 6 hours playing with lego.

I wouldn't have thought that simple shaped wooden blocks would give anywhere near the amount of entertainment that lego gives.

I think the fun with wooden blocks is you can build actual biggish structures, which could be then used to play with other toys such as cars, a train set, playmobil or animals etc.

Lego is wonderful too, they are just different types of construction toy.

My DS (6) and DD (4) have loads of Lego and will spend hours playing it. Like Arana says just don't get hung up on them building what's on the box. We build it once with them and then once it breaks it all goes into a huge box and they just create new stuff. At 6 DS is just starting to go back to the original instructions and want to build the originals himself - but he usually modifies them
I do know however this casual attitude to lego storage does make some MNs clutch their pearls in horror!
