What can I ask for that is cheapish, easy to get (not online) and isn't cash/vouchers?

My DM doesn't like giving cash or vouchers at Christmas (fair enough), she has asked DH and I for present ideas and we are stuck as to what to ask her for - books always used to be a winner but we've both got Kindles now.

Trouble is she doesn't do internet shopping and her local shops are pretty rubbish so it really needs to be something that can be bought from one of the big chains (she's got Boots/M&S/Argos etc but all smallish branches). I thought maybe something for our house as a joint gift but haven't come up with anything so far. Any ideas? I'm stumped!

Pyjamas? Is there an M&S near her?

SillyBlueHat · 21/11/2012 08:29

I have the same problem. So far I have come up with a recipe book. I would ask for pyjamas or slippers but she has very different taste to me

CuriousMama · 21/11/2012 08:36

What about a nice hamper? How cheap?

CuriousMama · 21/11/2012 08:38

Some ideas.

They're in Yorkshire and do online, I know it's no good for your Mil. Why not online? Could she not get someone to help her or does she not like using her debit card online?

Ragwort · 21/11/2012 08:38

Wine Grin.

CambridgeBlue · 21/11/2012 09:47

I think I may need it Ragwort :)

CuriousMama - she's only just mastered the internet, online shopping is the next step but it's a very slow process!

I agree that taste comes into it - I could say 'pyjamas' or 'a red cotton jumper size 12' and she'd still manage to find something dodgy!

Is she a good cook - how about she promises to bake you a cake a week? Easy pressie and a treat to look forward to.

Doing this for my fil this year as long as mil doesn't take the hump about it

Or promises to a certain number of babysitting duties during the year so you can go out (assuming you have dcs)

tiokiko · 21/11/2012 09:58

Photo frame or nice album? Towels (hard to get wrong if you specify colour)? If there's something you like in M&S she can order in her branch and get it delivered for collection there so no online shopping angst.

Champagne?

purse/wallet
memory cards for camera
food
very specific toiletries
cd
key rings

dinkystinky · 21/11/2012 10:52

Any books you're dying to read?

CambridgeBlue · 21/11/2012 10:56

I'm doing WeightWatchers so would prefer to avoid food presents. Think I may have to go with toiletries/perfume or similar. I hate being put on the spot like this and being forced to think of something I'd like - surely people who love you should know what you want without needing to be given detailed instructions Confused. I know it's only because she wants us to have something we want/need but it takes all the fun out of it!

What about asking for a ww food hamper? Get her to make up a basket with ww treats from the supermarket? I'm on ww too and i'd love that. My best birthday present this yr was from a fellow ww'er and she made me a fruit basket!

Prizepudding · 21/11/2012 11:35

DVD box set?

CambridgeBlue · 21/11/2012 13:08

WW hamper would be fab!

I could ask for DVDs but I know she'll go and buy them somewhere on the High St when she could get them for half the price on Amazon and I don't want her to waste her money.
