im working an early shift on both xmas day and boxing day. i will have to get up at 5am, leave the house at 6am and wont get back in until 4.30.

dh is getting all giddy and buying food and for me its just going to be another day in a job im not terribly fond of....

dd is moaning about it cos i wont be there

i should have worked last year but i fell down stairs in december and was off until the end of jan.
but this year i have to work it. no question of me getting it off. and im Sad and actually dreading it because i have never worked one before....i feel like the whole world is going to be having a great day while im dealing with the same old same old as any other day....

i cant snap out of it.

dh asked me not to spoil it and said we can still have a lovely xmas eve - only i will be anxious knowing i have to go to bed at 9pm to get up at 5am....i need sleeping tablets on a normal early shift so this one is going require a double dose....

i cant help it. i feel Sad
and grinchy.

Hmm. I have no idea if this will help at all but whenever I see anyone working on Christmas day I always feel all warm and happy towards them. Specially if you're in the emergency services - you get all my festive wishes. Any good to you? probably not but I can eat a mince pie for you anyway

You will probably hate me for saying this but hey ho.....I think that you should be grateful that you have a job to go to, there are many people who would gladly have your job if you didn't want it. Also be grateful that you have a lovely family to come home to...many people don't!
Having said that my job doesn't involve Christmas Day working so I probably don't know what I am talking about!!

onessa i think you have to accept it's part of the job, but you don't have to be happy about it.

My DH is in the emergency services, and sometimes has to work christmas day, he's not police but has a similar experience, domestics, suicides and one year more than one SID over the festive period, it's pretty grim.

i know onessa and i do count my blessings - at least i try to - but im just not quite finding my feet in this job somehow, and really cant say its all i had thought it was going to be - there is such a huge amount of shit to wade through each day and its grinding me down a wee bit, to the point i seem to never be quite in the best of health.

but, as you say, its a job, and its secure for now.

and im very grateful for my lovely DH and my kids, so i will try and be a bit more grateful and a bit less grinchy.

i just cant quite seem to snap out of it or get into the festive spirit.

i think we will probably have a nice time when i get home, its just that i know i ve to get up so early the following day thats really put the mockers on it for me.

i will have to make the best of it, i know. and im not the only one working, and its not like i didnt know about bank hols working when i joined - i will moan more next year when they dont pay us anything extra for it more though....

somehow i am working next year too.
