Do you and/or DCs wear new clothes on Xmas day?

Following on from the new jammies thing.

Do you get the DCs or yourself something new to wear?

I haven't in the past but quite like the idea of doing it. For the DCs maybe. Or maybe not.

No. We normally just wear normal clothes but last year we dressed up smart. Nothing new though.

FayeKorgasm · 19/11/2012 19:46

I do get something new to wear.

My lovely DH does the cooking so I don't have to worry about spills or splashes ruining it. Grin

Yes, always new clothes for Xmas day....not me just the children!! And we are normally back in PJs at 3ish!!!

DancesWithWoolsEnPointe · 19/11/2012 20:57

The children do get new clothes - always.

dc get a mixture - in their stocking there's always a new vest, pair of pants, pair of socks and christmas tshirt - then these things are conveniently to hand and exciting to put on for christmas day when trying to chivvy them to get dressed rather than stay in their pjs when we need to be getting dressed.

They probably wear it with trousers that they already have - although I will have made sure that the jeans or whatever they particularly like wearing at the time are clean and don't have holes in!

Typically the underwear from the stocking will have come from multipacks - so the rest of those will turn up under the tree. Might have to be careful with that this year - ds1 is now 7 and old enough to start to care about reading packages and spotting that the pack of 7 pants only has 6 in it or whatever!

Boxing day we often have guests over so I'll have made sure there's another nice new tshirt or shirt to be opened - just makes life easier when in the morning again as they like to put clean new stuff on. Although it does mean that they often end up wearing tshirts that are on the big side (ds's birthday is in may so I will often end up buying the size he's going to be). It's all family though for both days so I'm happy to see them in a nice tshirt - then they are comfortable but still looking reasonably respectable (I'm rubbish at ironing and never bother with it).

If we've been to a wedding in the year or something similar where they have had nice outfits, I might try to co-erce them into wearing them if we have guests or go somewhere nice, but dh is the eternal scruff bucket and hates dressing up for anything other than a wedding or an interview (and has been known to dress down just to point this out Hmm) (well he doesn't like dressing up for the wedding or the interview either but he accepts there are times that he needs to look smart - just never when he's out with us!)

I can see however that if you have little girls that you might not be able to wrap up a nice dress and hope for it to remain crease free when stuffed in a stocking and then ripped open and thrown into the present pile to bring in to show parents quite as easily as a tshirt survives it all!

Yes, I wear a paper hat, new one every year

And dodgy underwear, if Santa has been looking at the M and S adverts...

Asinine · 19/11/2012 21:36

I usually get the DC a new party dress to wear, Next have some beautiful ones this year, and some shoes to go with them. We have a party at New Year so they wear them then too. DP puts on a shirt and I put on a dress but ours aren't ever new things.

But this year we are having xmas at home, no guests, so i might just about make it into some joggers!

MrsDeterminedandSpecialMum · 20/11/2012 10:30

My DC get new jammies and new outfit for Xmas day & Boxing Day. Smile

sparkle12mar08 · 20/11/2012 10:34

No - £100 is probably half of my clothing budget for them for the year!!! They, and we, wear smart clothes but I never buy new solely for christmas, no.

duchesse · 20/11/2012 10:37

No! What a bizarre idea. If any new clothing is worn on Christmas day, it's because it was a Christmas present. This year I am knitting jumpers for both older daughters so they will have new jumpers to wear if they wish. I don't set out to clad them head to toe in new clothing though.

OhTheConfusion · 20/11/2012 10:45

Why a bizarre idea Duchesse? Christmas day for us is a large family gathering and we think it's nice to dress up.

bedmonster · 20/11/2012 10:54

Well duchesse the dresses I buy for the DDs will be one of their presents. I normally hang them up in their wardrobes and put a ribbon round the hanger. Then after opening stockings they are told to look in the wardrobes for something to wear before going down to open their other presents. It makes them get dressed very quickly!

bondigidum · 20/11/2012 12:48

We would if we saw family on Xmas day but we stay home alone so stay in jammies all day!

carrie74 · 20/11/2012 13:02

New PJs on Xmas Eve for all of us, and I usually try to get something new for the children. This year I've bought a dress (which isn't too fancy, so can be worn for parties and dressed down) with tights and a cardie for DD and a shirt and jacket (H&M special) for DS. Neither of them appreciate new clothes for Xmas though - they think it's a boring present (age 7 & 5).

We tend to open presents in PJs, so then they can get changed into their new clothes afterwards.

My mum always used to buy me a special Xmas dress as one of my presents.

Fluffy1234 · 20/11/2012 13:06

I've never thought of wearing anything new on Christmas day. My only criteria is that whatever I wear has to have an elasticated waist.

BuntyCollocks · 20/11/2012 16:04

We always dress up, and if we get new clothes, we'll wear them. This year, though, I'll either be pregnant or breastfeeding, so I won't be wearing anything new. DS has a lovely outfit DM got him for Christmas, and DH will wear a shirt, either new or from the wardrobe.

fuzzpig · 20/11/2012 16:15

DCs will be getting new undies and socks (nice character ones as opposed to usual cheapies) in their stocking.

I am sure DS will only be excited by a character t-shirt rather than a smart shirt, being 3, maybe I can get a Cars or Scooby Doo one - they virtually never have character clothes so it would be a real treat. DD would be very excited to unwrap a pretty dress though.

I really can't be arsed to find new jeans for DH or myself so maybe I'll just choose a top for myself (I already have this for DH)

If I do all of this I'll wrap them up as extra pressies - we are still in sleepwear when we open them.

As a child I always had a new dress for Christmas and my birthday. I do the same for DD as I think it is a lovely tradition.
