Outside - white lights strung around door and porch area.
Hallway - gold candles, tree decorated in gold with yellow lights.
Reception - silver candles, tree decorated in silver with white lights.
Family room - tree decorated with assorted baubales collected and made througout the years. Many battery operated sanatas and snowmen Grin...

Pretty much anything goes.

Each year we would choose one hanging ornament of our choice for the tree, the kids do it now so it looks very chaotic!

Plus I treated myself to some glittery tacky looking reindeer in the sales last year, so they'll add to the effect.

I even it all out by having real holly spread on my mantlepiece along with my nativity scene (minus Mary because she did a runner)

GrandPoohBah · 28/10/2012 18:08

We have the largest tree we can possibly fit into our living room (we've established that this is 7ft), decorated in reds and golds. My family wrapping has a theme (it was brown paper with nice ribbons last year, this year I'm thinking 'vintage gold'), but no one else will do as they're bloody told cooperate with that so it ends up as a mishmash under the tree. There will be mistletoe in the hallway, a garland on the bannisters and over the mantelpiece, and fairy lights everywhere else.

DH indulges me as he loves Christmas as much as I do :)

civilfawlty · 28/10/2012 18:11

Random, lots of gorgeous transparent but brightly coloured glass baubles. TONS of fairy lights and candles. This year I'm going to make turquoise hearts and thread them on red string to hang on the tree (like in Blue Kangaroo).

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 28/10/2012 18:30

Outside: like a gigantic version of a Christmas themed brothel Grin flashing lights, reindeer etc I blame the kids

Inside: minimal; we only have a Christmas tree but have a double height barn so it's a 20 footer.

PrincessPumpkinshoutsBOO · 28/10/2012 18:35

The style in the boo house........ if there is a space, fill it with something!! Windows all have lights, garden has a light up reindeer, 2 trees (at least) ornaments, hanging things, dangly things, shiny things, noisy things Grin ooh I'm getting excited just thinking about it :):)

Taffraid · 28/10/2012 18:37

Tasteful mishmash. No colour theme but it looks bloody cool. If I do say so myself.

LucyBorgia · 28/10/2012 18:55

Lol at 70s disco Grin

Bonsoir · 29/10/2012 10:29

I decorate my tree with lots of artificial flowers, birds and butterflies as well as some glass baubles and lights. It's very pretty! I replace some decorations every year in order to refresh the look, but the theme is constant. I have special Christmas tablecloths, napkins etc.

Every year I do something else a bit different - it depends what takes my fancy and what I find in the shops.

wordfactory · 29/10/2012 17:41

I just bought these ding dong

peeriebear · 29/10/2012 17:53

Tacky here :) I love putting the tree up. We have a different topper every year as we have no angel. Instead one of the children's (or one of my) toys goes on top sporting a tiny santa hat for the occasion. Last year it was the turn of my vintage straw-stuffed teddy bear. Previous years have included a rat hand puppet, plush Cthulhu and Tigger. The rest of the decorations are a mix of old, new, tacky, tasteful, vintage, homemade and bought. And miles of tinsel! I even bought lurid orange and purple Halloween tinsel last year and put it away for Christmas.

Onadietcolabreak · 29/10/2012 20:09

I think most people would think my scheme a bit [hhmm] but it looks nicer than it sounds (honest!)
I have a Black tree [hshock] with silver, crystal and a little bit of white decs.
I have string beads draped over pictures and curtain rods in silver and black and oversized baubles in windows and huge ones over dining table.
Plenty of white candles on mantle piece and silver baubles scattered around the fire.
My fave pieces are my oversized ornate silver snow globe I brought years ago and love to bits, but with a toddler this year I think it should stay saferly wraped in its box, just in case and my black glitter dear head (aka Davvee) above the mantle.

Because of my living room décor (black furniture and grey walls) it looks like a black and white photo [hgrin]

I won't start on the rest of the house (we do every room in a different style, even the loo)

You can see I take Christmas very seriously Grin

Onadietcolabreak · 29/10/2012 20:11

Grin at Missbeehiving Christmas themed brothel!

NoSoggyBottoms · 30/10/2012 17:31

Iseethreadpeople - brilliant idea! I love it too!

For us:

Big tree (artificial sadly) in front room....purple, red and silver. No tinsel garlands, but those tinsel string things. multicoloured lights. Am a bit funny about putting candy canes on tree - although MIL would like it...too American for me. Not her tree though Wink

Used to put tinsel around door handles but drove DP barmy Sad

A few other bits and bobs, certainly nothing that would appear in a magazine.

Usually raid pound shops and Home Bargains for wonderful tacky Christmas decorations!

DewDr0p · 30/10/2012 18:02

Main tree in the living room is 10ft, real and decorated with beautiful red, white and silver decs that were mainly bought pre children. They aren't all matchy matchy though and feature a few humorous touches like glitter balls so I hope stop just this side of department store display.

I load the mantlepiece with holly, red berries (fake) and fairy lights and have a few other bits and bobs dotted around the house.

Then there is the children's tree which is a fab mishmash of coloured lights, tinsel, homemade and donated decs with a few left in stockings by the great FC himself. secretly that's my favourite bit

ChippingInLovesAutumn · 30/10/2012 18:27

Usually a real tree in the lounge - I love the smell, but we have a fake tree I took pity on once Grin that comes out too (& goes in another room), or occasionally instead of.

I buy a couple of new bigger things each year & I often buy Christmas ornaments if I go on holiday as I like the 'minimal' look normally, but love lots of 'tat' at Christmas love it when it comes down even more!!

The 'theme' is Christmas tacky :) Mostly reds, greens, whites - but I don't rule anything out with a bit of colour! Tree lights are a mix of white and multi coloured (I think we put about 3 sets on the tree).

We have 'Merry Christmas' & 'Happy New Year' lights that go up on the 'outside' windows and this year I'd like to get a Santa as well. We don't do much outside as there never seems to be time to do it, it's cold and it's bloody hard work!! I love going to see what others have put up, but I always donate if there is a way to do so.

I think that colour co-ordinated houses/trees look pretty (when done nicely!) but it's not 'Christmas' to me.... I love the colour and the tat!!

Loveweekends10 · 30/10/2012 19:06

Christmas tree. All decorations collected over the years from different countries. Red mostly.
Garlands, wreaths, Christmas jumpers you name it.
Table decorated in purple with silver candlesticks.
I'm even going to get a wood burning stove fitted before Xmas just so it makes it more Christmassy!

LadyLetch · 31/10/2012 01:30

Real tree, decorations on it are mostly white, silver and gold. Also have warm yellow lights and absolutely no tinsel. Have white fluff instead - much nicer!

Other decorations are tacky (it's my concession and put up by the children).

I think it looks nice, some might say its a little boring, but I'd say tasteful and I really don't do the 1970s tacky look!

VintageNancy · 31/10/2012 02:31

Last year we didn't have a tree as we had just moved to the US and into our rented house three days before Christmas.

This year we'll go to a Christmas Tree Farm and cut down our own tree Grin and I have no idea on colours etc as we're starting from scratch. Kinda regretting not shipping our decorations now... I will definitely be making some. And there'll be a Baby's First Christmas bauble (or two) hanging proudly Wink.

I love silver & in previous years I've done all silver decorations. Feeling a bit of traditional red coming on this year but we'll see.
