Does your nine year old believe in Santa?

I mentioned Father Christmas to my dd the other day and she sort of laughted nervously (I could have been mistaken I suppose).

If she didn't anymore I think she wouldn't say. How do I find out or should I leave it and see?

Can you tell me what your experiences are please? Thanks.

Yes and the Easter bunny too. I haven't heard any doubts creeping in but they haven't Done anything Christmassy yet at school. I think someone will say something to one of them. Sad

inchoccyheaven · 25/10/2012 14:01

Neither my 10 or 12 yr old have every questioned F.C and I won't be bringing it up. I would be very surprised if 12 yr old still believed seeing as he is a secondary school but I am happy for the pretence to continue :)

MirandaWest · 25/10/2012 14:46

Now we've never done the Easter Bunny and I pay lipservice to the tooth fairy really, but Father Christmas is Real :)

scootle · 25/10/2012 15:25

My 8 year old doesn't believe - she keeps telling me she knows it is me. She didn't bother put her tooth under her pillow for the tooth fairy either. I haven't completely agreed that FC isn't real but haven't lied either. I am a bit sad and really hoping that dd2 keeps believing for a while longer.

No.
She knows that I expect her to play along with it for the sake of her younger brother and other younger children of the world and her reward for playing along is fun Christmassy events like grottos and a gift from FC under the tree.

The first of her friends to find out was back in y2. She has an older teen sister unlike her other friends which may have contributed to her finding out earlier.

crazygracieuk · 25/10/2012 16:00

Dd also plays along with tooth fairy do she gets her £1.

BadgersGhostlyRetreatWoo · 25/10/2012 16:55

it's usually siblings that give the game away long before aged 9. I know my older sister took great delight in telling me

we always kept up the pretence in front of Mum (she knew we knew) and i got a stocking till i moved out aged 21 Grin

LadyLetch · 25/10/2012 17:14

My DD (9 in Nov) still believes as do a lot of children in her class. They are mostly only / eldest siblings which helps.

DD is utterly convinced Santa is real because He brings her Coco pops and chewing gum, which mummy does not allow her to have - so to DD, that completely proves he exists Grin

headfairy · 25/10/2012 17:19

My niece is 10 and my sister is convinced she still believes in FC... Maybe my niece is just humouring her :o

Oh I feel very heartened by your posts! I will say nothing then and see how it goes. Dd told me tonight that the girls in her drama group had been talking about Xmas but she wouldn't tell me what exactly!

If you think about it it's a pretty massive deception all round. And then we tell them lying is wrong! Wouldn't change it though.

This is the first year that DD2 doesn't believe, last year when she was 10 she was 80% sure he didn't exist .... but how could mum pay for all these presents???Shock DD1 is 13 and has always played along with it, although she did say the other day .... don't suppose we will get any presents from Santa this year now!! ... But they will both still have a stocking with Santa s presents in Smile but not sure we will still be putting out the mince pie and glass of milk on Christmas Eve!! bit sad really Sad

anja1cam · 26/10/2012 16:25

My DD is 8.5 and knows, she asked last year, kids had talked about it at school and had put the home clues together too. But she happily plays along for her younger sister's sake, in a way it givers her an excuse to 'believe' even though she know the truth... the personalised letters they got from Santa last year (nothing to do with me..., I didn't even know) rekindled some of the spell though. I think they very much want to believe...

CremeEggThief · 26/10/2012 16:26

My ten year old DS still claims to believe...

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 26/10/2012 16:29

My DS stopped believeing at 8 and told his sister aged 6 Santa did not exist! She carried on for another year believing after that.

Personally, I think the Santa myth should stop at about five!

NoSoggyBottoms · 26/10/2012 18:03

My 11 yr old DS still believes in Father Christmas, tooth fairy, Easter bunny...

Creates a few discussions between myself and DP. DP wants DS to know they don't exist, I still want the magic to stay alive!

Harder now he's in Y7. Will have to tell him not to tell others that he believes!

exexpat · 26/10/2012 18:09

DD has just turned 10, and hasn't believed for at least two or three years now. She has played along to keep it up for her younger cousin (even helped me chose a couple of stocking presents for cousin last year) abut apparently the cousin, who is now 7, has recently declared that she knows Santa is really daddy.

I thought that was a normal sort of age to twig - I'm pretty sure I was 6 or so when I worked it out - so I'm a bit surprised by all these older kids who apparently still believe.

whimsy · 26/10/2012 18:27

Ds1 9 still believes. Last year I had two mothers come up to me and said what a lovely boy he was Grin There had been a discussion in class and he was the only boy who stood up for four girls who had said they still believed in him. I think this will be his last year though, he's 10 just before Christmas but I'll never confirm the truth Wink
