Would you get your 10 year old dd this??

dd is still really into imaginative play - plays with dolls and soft toys for hours. I always respond on threads asking if it's ok to buy a 9/10 year old girl a pram or dolls with "of course - they're meant to play with toys at this age" etc....but now she's asking for a kids doctor and vet set for Christmas. These are meant for 3 years old..we had them years ago but I chucked them as thought she had outgrown them. What do you think? I remember playing vets with my soft toys at that age - but should I get her these toys now or try and steer her to something more appropriate for her age (not that I can think of anything).

Help!

My dd is 10 so yes, if that's what she was into.

I bet you could cobble together a more realistic vets set. You can get better toy stethoscopes for example and you could get real syringes. You could get some real x-ray photos. You could get books about animals for reference.

I made our toy kitchen into a vets after we saw a one at the zoo. It has a magnifying glass, measuring tape, clip-board, glass jars with different coloured beads in for pills, and a drawing thing that lights up for x-rays.

Real stethoscope here or blood pressure kit here a thermometer and a selection of bandages, plasters etc from pondland all in a black bag. You could have a budding medic on your hands.

If its what she wants then why not?

She knows her own mind, definitely get it if price is fine for you.

Learning resources do quite a nice animal hospital. You can get it on amazon, not sure how to link! Quite a nice one though with X-rays, plaster casts etc

Thanks for the postive posts. Like the idea of the real stuff - might try and steer her towards that (or get her brother to do it - he's really good at finding things for her to give ideas. WHat she really wants is a dog - a real one. And that's not happening yet).

What about the playmobil vet set? We got one for dd2 but dd1 also likes it - it's very detailed with all the animals, medicines etc

I would be I'd get something more age appropriate than the brightly coloured, chunky plastic sets that preschoolers like.

Like the suggestions of real or more realistic kits, or the playmobil set.

THought I'd just update - in the end I bought a largish plastic tub and stuck on a green cross sticker. Filled it with a stethoscope, thermometer, ear thingy, bandages, plasters. alcohol swabs, tongue deperssors etc together with a clipboard and pad and cheap older kids dress up doctor costume. It went down a storm - dd says it was her best Christmas present.
