Best Christmas DVD for 3.5 year old and 18 month old

iloveholidays · 14/09/2012 20:49

Just looking for recommendations for a DVD for my 3.5 year old and 18 month old DD's for Christmas Eve. I've been looking at Mickey Mouse or maybe The Muppets?

My 18 month old isn't really into watching TV so will really be for my 3.5 year old.

Any recommendations?

Thanks

Ds loved polar express last year when he was 2.7. He watches the snowman all year round too!

Onadietcolabreak · 15/09/2012 20:25

My DD is 18 months and the wiggles are the only thing that keep her attention and I've just brought the Xmas DVD for her to watch in Dec Grin or sooner!
The great thing about the wiggles is that she sits there but she also dances and 'sings' along. So I don't feel as if I'm just plonking her there to be a couch potato. And DS (5) also loves them too.

Other than that you can't go wrong with the muppets or home alone.
Saw arthur Christmas last year at the cinema, fantastic film. Will be buying that to go in there Xmas eve hamper to snuggle up and watch before they go to bed Smile

Peppa Pig had a special Christmas episode.
It's longer than five minutes, yay.

MySecretSelf · 15/09/2012 20:33

Another Polar Express household here! However we loved Arthur Christmas at the cinema last year, so will definitely buying that this year.

Fizzylemonade · 15/09/2012 20:50

Another Polar Express vote here although ds1 is now 9 and he always fast forwards through one part that frightens him. But apart from that it is a firm favourite and the Gruffalo too.

We saw Arthur Christmas at the cinema last year too, so we may get that.

iloveholidays · 15/09/2012 20:55

Thanks onadietcokebreak, didn't realise that the wiggles had a christmas dvd and she loves the wiggles so that will be a definite purchase although still keen to get a film.

The Grinch Who Stole Christmas is a good one.

BikeRunSki · 15/09/2012 21:02

Not especially Christmasey, but the Wallace and Gromit films are a Christmas tradition for us - they are ageless and suit all ages.

dylsmimi · 15/09/2012 21:11

I love muppets Christmas carol & always watch.it while wrapping presents! but maybe a bit.scary near the end. As children we liked Santa Claus the movie!
Most tv programs have Christmas specials but I've read that this year there will be a new snowman film!! With the.snowman and his dog! Our house is very excited (we had.to hide the snowman dvd about March as I was getting bored!)

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 15/09/2012 21:16

Polar Express- not scary but the bit where the train goes down the track like a roller coaster might be.
And where it skids across the ice. And the cariboo (reindeer)

I don't like the tramp/ghost who looks like Sean Bean, but then I find Sean Bean scary Blush

It's very good animation, you kind of forget it's a cartoon.

amck5700 · 15/09/2012 21:33

Not sure what scared my son - despite the fact that he will happily watch Lord of the Rings, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter later movies etc. I took him to see "A Christmas carol " when it came out and had to take him out the cinema as he was terrified (and he was nearly 10 at that point)

When it came out on dvd he couldn't walk past the stands of the dvds in the supermarket - completely freaked!

He will now watch Polar Express (nearly 12!) but we haven't risked A Christmas Carol yet.

2012 is the only other movie to have him hiding and that was fairly recently.

DisabilEightiesChick · 15/09/2012 21:40

Ice Age Christmas? Only about 25 mins long though. Also the Octonauts Christmas specials are good. They usually put them on CBeebies again around the Christmas run up.

Elf is a great Christmas film though not sure a 3.5 yo would fully get it. They would like Ice Age Christmas.

changeforthebetter · 15/09/2012 21:42

Snowman (though DD1 gets very emotional when he melts Grin) DD2 was pretty scared by the Grinch at 3 but she is a wuss Grin

iloveholidays · 15/09/2012 21:47

Thanks, she loves the ice age films so maybe I should look into that. Only seems to be in dollars on amazon though...

Backyardigans Secret of snow. Short episodes with singing and dancing to keep their attention. Dd1 has loved this since she was 18 months and still does at 3.3, my 6 month old likes it too.

DisabilEightiesChick · 15/09/2012 22:12

OP, there are second hand sellers offering it on Amazon, I think. But I bought it last year from Asda who I think were the exclusive sellers then, for £5. I wouldn't be at all surprised if they have it in stock again this year so probably worth your while checking there nearer the time. (not that I think it's too early...)

iloveholidays · 15/09/2012 22:14

That's great thank I'll keep my eye open for it in asda

My dd loved Mickey Mouse Once Upon a Christmas and Santa Buddies.

We watched Polar Express last year for the first time, and didn't like it at all.

janji · 15/09/2012 23:41

Santa buddies lovely and if the children like it there's lots more of this range to go to in the coming year e.g snow buddies etc

Quenelle · 19/09/2012 14:17

DS is now 3.3 and he loved The Grinch and The Snowman last year. We put them away with the decorations after Christmas so they didn't get 'stale' throughout the year.

DH's favourite is the Muppet Christmas Carol. He has tried to get DS into it but he's just not interested yet.

xmasevebundle · 20/09/2012 02:57
