peg boards for 4 yo

I am looking to buy a peg board and pegs for my 4 yo DS. he isn't brilliantly co-ordinated, and certainly isn't advanced in co-ordination skills for his age. Can anyone recommend one please? I think the HAMA ones I've seen on Amazon would be too small for him to master.

Ebay Would this be any good?

Got a good one from ELC last year - might be worth a look. Avoid Hama beads for as long as you can - they get everywhere!

Oreo - yes, that looks good! Am I being dense, or are they supposed to actually create something that resembles something with the pegs on the board? Or follow a pattern? Or what?

Have a look at the tap a shape set they do in ELC my dc all enjoyed playing with that. They do larger hama beads think they are called maxi but like imperial said they get everywhere, how about lacing cards?

oreocrumbs · 03/09/2012 18:09

I think they can do anything! I had one when I was little that had designs you could copy - but that was 20 odd years ago, so I'm not sure now. Or they can just make patterns and designs that they create.

From the look of similar listings they appear to be used in schools for maths, helping with basic counting and hundreds, tens and units when they are older (do they still teach it that way??).

There were lots of listings quite similar to that so if you just search peg board on ebay you can have a trawl through and see which one would best suit.

The tap a shape is great too, so do check that out. I think you can get sets of things in elc that have lacing cards, threading beads and a couple of other similar boards. My DD is too young for these yet and my DSD is far too old so I'm a bit out of the loop of what's what!

My 4yr old son likes the maxi Hama beads but we only have them as he can't manage his big brother's normal ones & wants to copy his brother - they do get everywhere & they bounce as they hit the floor for maximum scatter effect!
He really likes his 'magnetic mosaic kids' set by the orb factory though. They do sticky mosaics too but I wanted something re-usable. Has lots of foam magnetic blocks and about 20 templates or you can make your own pattern. The blocks are about 1cm square. He is good at putting those in a tub after though (shame we can't do the same with Hama beads!). Think it was between £15-20 on amazon.

Thanks all.

I have already ordered the tap a shape after seeing DS play with a friend's son's set. It is just the kind of thing he likes.

electric - that type of set will really improve his motor skills, so thanks for that suggestion.

heavy - I have ordered that peg board! I think it looks great. Hopefully DS will enjoy doing it with me!

Whilst looking for djeco on amazon, I saw the djeco light modelling craft sets, which I have also ordred, plus some extra clay. I now need to put it all away for Christmas, and not give it all to DS between now and then!
