NCForNow it's 18 gifts (plus more bits on the OPs to buy list) from 1 person (ok 2 if you include Santa)! It's not like 18 party goers bringing a small gift each on a child's birthday.

NCForNow · 29/08/2012 13:57

They do around here mumdebump! When my DDs have attended or held parties to which the whole class is invited there can be around 30 gifts for the birthday child.

mumdebump · 29/08/2012 14:40

Sorry, my point was that a birthday party there might well be lots of gifts but they would be from lots of people not from just one person. 1 giver = 1 gift at the party IYSWIM :) And party gifts do tend to be smaller gifts of the stocking filler variety

NCForNow · 29/08/2012 14:52

What's the difference though? It's still a big ol' pile of gifts. If the OP can afford it and she's happy why does it matter that she got them all?

sunnyday123 · 29/08/2012 14:53

i don't really see what the big deal is of buying presents is you can afford it?

My dds both have birthdays in Sept/ Nov and i'll spend about £75 each. For xmas i spend up to £150 each on main present and the same each on stocking fillers. Their GPs spend £100 each on them, aunties and uncles x4 spend up to £50 each on them. I know its a lot but they can afford it and we like to make a big deal about christmas :) . The toys they get all get played with so its not like its going to waste.

Threads like this always turn into discussions on how much money people spend but really its each to their own - some people like to keep it small, others like to go mad. There's no right or wrong as everyones experience of xmas is different.

NCForNow · 29/08/2012 15:16

That's right sunny. though there was a very inspiring thread last year about a poster who spends very little but have the most magical Christmas. She listed all their traditions and it was fabulous.

I probably spend about 150 on my elder DDs main gift and about 100 on her other things.

The 4 year old dd has less money's worth but then her things are cheaper by default.

LaurieBlueBell · 30/08/2012 14:03

That list is very similar to what my same age dd will be getting. There are lots of small things that I would use as stocking fillers.

Blitzen my dd has also got the brave girl dress up outfit. I always put a comic in the Dcs stockings. I found a special edition Brave comic in WH Smith yesterday. It comes with a necklace and pair of slippers to match the outfit.

LadyLetch · 31/08/2012 02:23

OP, it's a lovely list and I'm impressed that you've managed to buy it all already. My DDs usually get a similar amount, although this year they had Olympic tickets and I've bought my girls blackberry playbooks, so they'll be getting just a few extra bits.

I have to say though, I think it is madness to judge people on what is too much when you don't know the bigger picture. The context of what else is given to the child and when is important, without knowing this it is meaningless to make a judgement call IMHO.

Like you, my girls get a big sack for Christmas with maybe 20 presents plus another 3/4 under the tree. Some may say this is too much, but I don't think so. Both my girls have their birthdays a few weeks before Christmas, so I don't buy expensive birthday presents. I spend £20/30 max. Last year my daughter's main birthday present was a £15 set of hair curlers and a can of hair glitter. Instead, we prefer to pay for quite expensive birthday parties, as in our house birthdays are more about the celebration and Christmas is the time for presents.

Further, I don't tend to buy my girls presents during the year. If I see something reduced when I'm up town, ill always put it away until Christmas. I don't buy my children a weekly magazine, they don't even get one monthly and I don't come home with little things I've seen that they'd like. If there's toys they want during the year, they need to save up their pocket money for it. However, because they do get so much at Christmas, some of it goes into a box in the garage and when they've been good, or they're bored throughout the year, they'll go and get one of their new craft sets or whatever from the Christmas box. The girls like doing this. Their Christmars sacks also contains lots of things they would be given anyway, I just choose to wrap it up. So every year, they get a new supply of pants / socks / vests / new pjs, slippers, dressing gown as needed etc. I'd have to buy this anyway, itbulks up the Christmas sack and my girls like gettingtheir new supply each year. So giving my child 25/30 presents at Christmas may sound like a huge amount, but when you consider that's pretty much all they get all year, I don't think 30 gifts a year is too many. I know some people who always bring something home from townfor their children - that's 52 gifts a year! Far more than I actually give.

JackiePaper · 01/09/2012 18:35

I don't think it's too much but I love Christmas and have a reputation for going a bit OTT! My dd is 5 and she is getting a new bike, a couple of Lego friends sets and some little things like moshi monsters, books etc DS is 8 and also getting a new bike a Lego police set (got this already half price!) and some books and other little bits. My problem is I see stuff that's a bargain (got some moshi stuff and a Lego friends set today 75% off in wilkos) then input it away in a cupboard and forget I bought it!Blush

TyrionTheImp · 01/09/2012 18:45

DD will be 5 and a half too and I've already bought her presents. Nothing like what you're getting as we don't have the money/space and for us that's excessive (I genuinely don't mean this as a judgement, you know your dc and how much they appreciate).

I set a £15 present limit for dd every year. Last year she had an alarm clock and a hydrangea (that was her genuine list), plus some bubble bath, a book, socks, toothbrush etc.

This year I have bought her a set of walkie talkies from the charity shop (£5) as her friend has some and she LOVES them, a skipping rope and I've been to a paint your own place and decorated a plate for her with a Ninja Turtle design (she's obsessed with them).

I'm also working on some paintings/drawings for her as we need to decorate her room and I want to get them done in time for Christmas. One is a fantasy scene with unicorns and dragons, the other is a stylised picture of her and her brother as superheroes. Hopefully she'll like them. I'll probably make her a dress too.

HokeyCokeyPigInAPokey · 01/09/2012 23:58

I don't think so Blitzen i normally buy dds about 25 - 30 presents each ranging from their main present to little stocking fillers.

Northernlurkerisonholiday · 02/09/2012 00:04

I think it's a great list. I usually get my dds one biggish present and then some clothes and a stocking with around a dozen parcels.

Not sure what to get dd3 yet. POssibly Playmobil.......must have a look for the Brave doll too.

DesperatelySeekingPomBears · 04/09/2012 22:32

Blitzen don't listen to the people telling you it's too much stuff. For plenty of families that is a perfectly normal list. It sounds as though your DD is going to have a lovely christmas morning.

4goingon14 · 04/09/2012 22:45

I agree that it is a perfectly normal list. I have not bought anything for my DD for xmas yet as it was just her 5th birthday a couple days ago. Now I need to start thinking about Christmas. We are considering going to Disney Florida at Christmas...so if we do this she will just get 2 or 3 presents. In addition to this probably an i-tunes voucher for £50 so that she can have games or rent movies of her chosing for the ipad

If we don't go to Disney then I will need to re-think things and work out what to get her.

We tend to spend quite a bit and make a big deal of it as we have no family over here and the gifts from us are the only ones she gets.
