MP3 player advice

DD will be 6.5 at Christmas and has made noises that she would like an MP3 player (not for Christmas, she has just mentioned one in general). Well, actually she has mentioned an Ipod touch after playing on DB's one, but I don't really want to spend out on one of those!

To be fair, she loves music and audiobooks and her old CD player is now jumping, so an MP3 player with speakers is something I know she would use a lot. I know nothing about MP3 players at all. I looked at the Ipod shuffle, but its so tiny I think even I would lose it and it seems to have small storage space. I'd like to get something she can save several audiobooks and all her songs to.

What would you recommend or what do your DC have? She is a careful child, so I don't need anything particularly robust.

I have a Sony Walkman mp3 player, much prefer it to our ipod. My 11 year old daughter has an mp3 player (with screen - similar layout to a nano) that cost £25 approx from Currys about a year ago, it's good enough for what she wants at the moment and I won't mind if she loses it or breaks it.

I was just about to ask this question myself - although DD will be 6 in a fortnight and we were thinking of getting her an MP3 player for her birthday. She has recently started 'liking' her own music and we thought this might be a gift she would use in her bedroom - she doesn't have any other form of electronic entertainment!

We would like to get something that she could listen to with earplugs but really want it to be able to work with speakers - ideally with a plug and not batteries.

Should we go for a Nano? she has no idea about brands...
