I desperately want to get DS a nice hardback book as one of his Christmas gifts. He'll be nearly one at Christmas so which do people think would be better, The Gruffalo, Guess How Much I Love You or something else? I already have a lovely copy of The Night Before Christmas for his Christmas Eve hamper Grin

Peepo is a lovely book for little ones I read it every day to my dd and now she is 2 she recites it along with me. Smile

Ooh I think I saw Peepo in Sainsburys, will have to have another look. Poor DS, he's going to be faced with so many books on Christmas morning!

Zzzz A Book of Sleep - by Il Sung Na

its a beautiful little board book about sleep and the pictures are so beautiful and its very soothing. I love it.

If you want to go All Out on the book front, someone on here does a Book Advent Calander so a new christmas/winter themed story book for every night in December.

I have been scouring the charity shops for books that fit this theme to do this with dd who will be one the week before christmas. She will get a few brand new books wrapped for christmas day too.

Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell. I love it, my DS1 loved it and my DS2 loved it. Great scope for BIG voices and different noises.

It's been around for 25 years so it must be doing something right.

My DS (who is now 12.6 yo) got a copy of Where the Wild Things Are when he was 3 months old! Mainly because ,like the hero ,he is called Max.
And my brother sought it out and bought it (it was before the film, I couldn't remember the name of the book, just the max part) Wink

I've added all of these suggestions to DS's Amazon wishlist, I'll pick him up a few and so will relatives Smile

Calm down boris has my DS in fits of giggles. Grin

DD(2, nearly 3) has 2 absolute favourite books, Dear Zoo and Room on the Broom. We do quite a lot of reading, (book worm for a mum) and she always gets a bedtime story. 9 times out of 10 she asks for the Witch Book! (RotB)

RobinSparkles · 13/08/2012 07:50

Calm Down Boris is a great book. There's also a Speak Up Doris and another one, that I can't think of the name of.

Ten Friendly Fish is a nice book and there are other similar titles by the same author.

SpanishFly · 19/08/2012 11:05

Search book titles on amazon to see if there are any books with your child's name in the title my son has a Christmas book and the main character has the same name as him. It goes in the attic with the xmas tree and comes out again with the tree.

He's 7 and still calls it "the book about me"

MrsRobertDuvallHasRosacea · 19/08/2012 11:13

Dear Zoo is lovely.
Also the Spot flap books.
And I remember dcs having some chunky board books with touchy feely bits " That's not my teddy" I think they were called.

inchoccyheaven · 26/08/2012 23:28

my dc loved goodnight moon when they were little and it was probably the only book I kept.

fluzle · 27/08/2012 04:25

Totally agree with the 'Dear Zoo' and 'Where the Wild Things Are' suggestions. Total classics. My absolute favourite though is 'Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy' and the rest of the series, written by Lynley Dodd. The characters (all dogs and cats) have brilliant names; Schnitzel von Krumm (with the very low tum) is a sausage dog for instance, and the language - all written in rhyme - is wonderful. I am a primary teacher and haven't met a young child who doesn't love them. My 3 y.o. certainly does - not that she's had any choice...! Of course, the Julia Donaldson books are fantastic too - my daughter's fave is 'Stick Man', which has a bit of a Christmassy bent; I love 'The Snail and the Whale' personally! And for 70s fabulousness, you can't beat Judith Kerr and her Mog books (I think the earlier ones are the best - 'Mog the Forgetful Cat' was the first) or 'The Tiger Who Came To Tea'.
And 'Peace At Last' by Jill Murphy is a big favourite in this house...
Sorry - I'm a bit of an enthusiast! Grin

Ds aged 2 has loved all of the following:
Peepo
Each Peach pear plum
The baby catalogue
Mog and the baby
That's not my puppy
That's not my dragon
That's not my dinosaur
The tigerskin rug
Room on the broom
The gruffalo - board book with sounds
Tiddler the storytelling fish
Most books by Richard Scarry!

howcomes · 27/08/2012 04:58

Sorry I forgot to add all of the spot books,Dear zoo and most recently the house of the 12 bunnies. If your ds likes cats Charlotte Voake has some lovely books such as Toms cat and Ginger and the visitor. Children can never have enough books!

trumpton · 27/08/2012 05:07

Monkey and Me . I read it 20 times to DGS yesterday . Again ! Again! He is nearly 2 but I only heard about recently on a three here . Certainly suitable from much younger and available in board book .
