Stocking fillers for boys

Virgil · 07/08/2012 12:08

I know it's August but I need to start getting small bits and pieces so that I don't have a mad panic closer to the time and to spread the cost.

Any thought for boys stocking fillers. Mine are five and seven.

So far I have a compass each a star wars expanding flannel thing and a new head torch.

woolgars toys is a great site for stocking fillers and party bag stuff.
I was recommended them by someone on here last Christmas and i have used them several times since.

Lego minifigures are good fillers too

MarigoldsInTheWindow · 09/08/2012 09:14

if you go to wilkinsons you can get this little torch that has a long bendy extendable thing that is a magnet (originally designed to pick up screws etc) my children are amazed at the mechanics down the road.
il be buying them for my datter and son ages 3 and 6

A big box of pavement chalk - my 7yo has just spent 2hrs drawing on the driveway!

Lots of "useful" items, eg bubble bath, sponge (Asda selling spongebob sponges now), hairbrush, toothbrush, toothpaste, drink bottle, new lunch bag, poundland often sell dvds (eg last yr I got xmen cartoon dvds, 6 episodes on each). I always put one of his requested presents on the top, after the year ds cried because he thought Santa hadn't brought him anything he asked for (they were all downstairs) :(

Aaaah SpanishFly Sad at your DS thinking Father Christmas hadn't given him his 'wanted' list presents.

When I was a child, we had our presents in a pillowcase at the end of the bed.
There wasn't the same "videoing children opening their presents and everyone watching" done then.

We told our DC (when they were little) that FC couldn't carry everything upstairs, so they were left under the tree. And their stockings were brought upstairs by the Elf. (We had a Sleeping Elf in the DC playhouse who had worked really hard and he was having a sleep, then going back with FC that night)
I used to take DS to the playhouse late Christmas Eve evening ,with a candle in a jar, DS in his Chrismas PJs. Then we'd open the door and peep at the tiny (cardboard box) bed with the Elf asleep. (He was a scrunched up flannel with a muslin cloth over, sleeping face painted on with make-up, a hat and a bell. His body was under a little blanket.

I am going to get a couple of those disposable cameras from Ikea.
Also bath bombs from lush...they love them!
DVD and chocs
That's it.

glammanana · 18/08/2012 19:44

Please tell me why I do not see oranges apples crayons and colouring book surely that is enough if the child is getting other presents as well,oh and some chocolate coins in one of those net bags.Stocking fillers are getting like party bags, its not about the children its about mum's wanting to supply the best bag. Before I duck behind my sofa and put on my tin hat I am not mean or penny pinching at all just realistic.

lauracindy · 18/08/2012 19:51

glammannana i have included crayons on mine :) Mine isnt about the best bag, if you look at my list (4 posts above) its what he would need through the year anyway, wash cloth/pants/crayons/toothbrush/toothpaste/socks/bubble bath/vests/fleece, only 3 'fun' things in there x

Badvoc · 18/08/2012 19:51

My da2 would love an apple and orange but my da1 doesn't eat them so would be less impressed!
my dad always talks about getting an orange and nuts for six as in his stocking but he was born just after the war and grew up during rationing...different time. Back then an orange and nuts were a rarity and something that was ,looked forward to alter.
Most children today have oranges and apples every day of the year, surely?
Xmas is about celebration and special times.

Badvoc · 18/08/2012 19:53

Argh!!
Damn autocorrect!
Looked forward to all year I meant!
I don't think a bath bomb, some choc and a DVD are ott tbh.
But I realise some people might...

glammanana · 18/08/2012 20:02

Don't think over the top myself just thinking that some of the lists (not all of them) seemed a bit long, tbh my gripe is with party bags as I was standing in a hall waiting for DGD and the conversation was about the appalling gifts that where given in a party bag at the previous party and I knew that the mum concerned had worked her socks off to give the party and supply the goodie bags, poor girl I was mortified for her and totally ashamed of the mums complaining.Sorry if anyone offended didn't mean to just looking at the more realistic and monetry point of view for some of the young mums as not everyone is fortunate to have limitless funds.Smile

Pancakeflipper · 18/08/2012 20:04

Those Bakugan things ( some discount shops have them cheap).

Tech Decs.
Whoopee cushions.
Seeds for planting during the year

lauracindy · 18/08/2012 20:14

no not offended at all! Its the same at DS's nursery, my DS1 went to a birthday party and came home with a few toys in his bag, he was THRILLED! But a few of the mums were complaining because it was pound shop toys, dispute the fact the poor mum provided over 20 bags so obviously didnt work out cheap at all some of the mums complained, quite sad really as like the mum you knew, she too worked her socks off (p.s im a young mum to 2 boy's, im 23 and dont have limitless funds so thank god for sales, saving early and buying sensible presents, also buying that they actually need and giving as presents, including clothes :) ) x

Badvoc · 18/08/2012 20:55

Glammanana...they sound like dreadful people! How crass and ungrateful!
I love stockings....my boys are quite small ones but I can get a bath bomb, DVD, chocs in them.
Ds1 has an advent candle (doesn't like choc!) and ds2 has a choc advent calendar.

Badvoc · 18/08/2012 20:57

Oh, and I didn't do party bags!! :)
I do family parties at home and the kids can invite who they want.
At my eldests in June my youngest nephew piped up with "where is my party bag Aunty * ?
I just told him it wasn't that kind of party! ;)

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 18/08/2012 21:33

Stockings come into their own when DC get older and instead of a lovely huge pile of brightly coloured boxes you have a few (very few) very small, very expensive gifts under the tree.

My DS isn't clothes savvy so he's not asking for Hollister or Superdry. But one year he had a watch, a digital camera and a new X-Box game as his main presents. Cost over £100 but very little to show.

The stocking gifts add to the overall fun of it, and they can eat a selection box before breakfast (well, it is Christmas) Grin

There's no competition, they are not compulsary.

We do it as part of our Christmas Traditions. The Traditions change every year, new ones come in, old ones (like going to feed reindeer) are stopped.

myBOYSareBONKERS · 19/08/2012 07:36

Have a look on Facebook and other local selling sites as they have stuff being sold cheaply. I have managed to get some toys that are still in really good condition for only a couple of pounds

SpanishFly · 19/08/2012 08:33

Our DCs believe Santa brings the stocking and one or two gifts, and all other gifts r from friends and family, so to us the stocking is one of the most exciting parts, and DS1 loves his, even when many of the things in it are "boring" eg facecloth and toothpaste!
