What age for a nintendo DS?

What is the age range for these?

Considering for DS who will be nearly 5 but I wonder if he is too young? I need to start saving. Also thought about a leappad but he has access to our ipad so I don't think it would work.

ds has had one since he was 3 (bought it for going on holiday - great for long journeys).

DS (my DC1) was 9 yo DD was 8 yo.
DS got the DS Lite, DD the DSi.

She uses hers for games, pictures and Brain Trainer.
He was surgically attatched to his until he got the X-Box.

But yes they are good for journeys.

My boys both had them from around 5 years old, bought for holidays, best thing for long journeys and keeping them entertained in the evening when they were too young to appreciate sitting a while over a nice meal. Smile

I agree, 5 is a good age to own a DS. Any younger and they can't quite manipulate it.

Dd2 got one last Christmas. She was 4 at time. She loves it!

AmandinePoulain · 23/07/2012 20:39

Dd has been given my dad's old one at 4, she's only got 1 game so far, a peppa pig one that she seems to enjoy. Just be careful what games you buy - she really wanted a Tangled one that was advertised as 3+ but when I read reviews they said that she would have to be a fluent reader to be able to play it Hmm. I would choose a ds over a LeapPad - you'll get many more years use out of it.

NeverKnowinglyUnderstood · 23/07/2012 20:39

going against the grain here..
I think 5 is too young.
Not for the games or enjoyment, but to give a DS as a form of entertainment.

peanutMD · 23/07/2012 20:47

if he wants one I'd say 5 is fine but don't buy one invade he likes it.

My DS has just turned 6 and after a few months of moaning I have caved in and told him to ask Santa for one.. Grudgingly!

I would rather he didn't have computer games etc but the ds already can be used to improve dexterity and stimulate the brain a bit a well as just having fun.

DowagersHump · 23/07/2012 20:50

DS (ho ho) keeps going on about getting one (he's 5) but I don't understand the differences between the DS Lite, the DS, the DSi and the 3DS. Anyone help please?

stargirl1701 · 23/07/2012 20:55

3DS not suitable for under 7s.

FreakoidOrganisoid · 23/07/2012 21:07

I had 6 in my head as a good age but as it happened my parents bought them for the dc st Christmas when they were 5.5 and 4. They have been brilliant on long train journeys etc nd both dc can use them better than i can!

peanutMD · 23/07/2012 21:09

The 3DS is fine for under 7's as long as you don't use the 3d element but is crap anyway.

There is a little slider at the side which turns it on or off.

My sisters have them and that is what my DS will be getting as the screen is bigger than most if the others which should stop stress on the eyes.if limited obviouslY!

Nintendo are concentrating on 3d now so you can party earlier games as well as new ones but the others will only play older ones so will have a limited span oyswim.

DowagersHump · 23/07/2012 21:17

I wondered if that might be the case peanut. I'm not buying him one for Xmas for him to be moaning for a 3DS by the time his birthday rolls around!

Seona1973 · 23/07/2012 21:24

Both mine now have the 3DS but neither of them use the 3D function. There are some games that can only be used in the 3DS but you can use older games in the 3DS too. They are shortly bringing out a 3DS XL which has a bigger screen.
