Where do you buy the jars and bottles for chutney and flavoured booze?

I love the idea of getting started on this early and would really enjoy making the things but not sure where I would go for the jars and bottles I would need and the baskets or hampers I might put them all in.

Any suggestions?

I've just been saving any bottles or jars that I might come across tbh. I have a wide variety of half bottles for liqueurs, and jam/pickle/sauce bottles for jam/ preserving. It looks nice if all the jars match, but who's going to know at the end of the day?

Lakeland is your friend.

Here www.waresofknutsford.co.uk/products_level2.htm?cat1=Preserving%20Bottles

The glass stopper ones are lovely

I got a job lot of Kilners from weeny chubby pots to large jars AND flip top rectangular bottles from our local pound shop

StBoniface · 14/07/2012 21:56

Thanks, I'll check out my local pound store to see what they might have before looking at the more expensive options!

I got a load of nice ones from jamjarshop.com (or .co.uk perhaps) which I think were significantly cheaper than lakeland.

Lexilicious · 14/07/2012 21:58

yes, www.jamjarshop.com.

TKMaxx had some rather cool vintage ones for a couple of quid a pop.

Another mumsnetter suggested buying jars of Tesco Value Lemon Curd at 22p a jar- buying jars is expensive, even if they do look lovely. I make lots of chutney each year and save my jam, marmalade and peanut butter jars etc over the year, storing them in the garage. You can deodorise them by putting a little bicarb topped up with water in the jar for a few hours. Be careful if you are making something delicate like lemon curd - you don't want to use an old curry paste jar! I save those jars for storing chutney which is usually highly spiced anyway.Kilner-type jars are pretty but if you are giving the chutney away, you lose your jar so I would only use these jars for myself.

For drinks, I buy bottles of (french?) lemonade from Waitrose. The ones with the top like a Grolsch bottle, they are usually about £1.69 each which is way cheaper than buying them from cookshops.

For kilner type jars, Ikea do really nice and very cheap variety. lots of sizes under £2.

M&S had those bottles on offer a few weeks ago- I stocked up (just before elderflower cordial season!). For everything else I use recycled jam or honey jars, or kilner jars. (or French equivalent)

Deffo lakelad and sometimes hobbycraft is best...if they arnt in stock in the shop yet you can normally get them online

Allice · 19/07/2012 13:56

Tesco value lemon curd is 22p per jar, I'm going to buy them and probably scoff all the lemon curd through the lemon curd away

Allice · 19/07/2012 13:56

Throw not through!
