It's DS's birthday on Saturday and I'm getting him a wii. And I've bought the Skylander game. Quick, while I still have time to take the game back ...do your dc's like Skylander ? Grateful for any feedback

DS1 is 8 and got this for Christmas. He also got an adventure pack and a triple pack of figures off a relative. He has had hours of play on it and loves it.

He wanted to spend his pocket money on some more figures today, but they have been very hard to find, I've had to order them off Amazon as most shops don't seem to be stocking them so soon after Christmas. And some of the figures are selling for silly money as well, the "rare" ones anyway.

roastparsnipsandbrusselsprouts · 02/01/2012 17:25

It might be worth hiding away a few figures for him worrier if funds are healthy but I would hold out as long as you can before giving them to him. My ds went for ages and discovered loads just on the initial 3.

When he was given the extra 3 for Christmas it "refreshed" the whole game and he went back to the beginning to see what he could do that he couldn't before. Sometimes it is more fun if you don't get too much at once! (that obviously doesn't count where chocolate is concerned though) Xmas Grin

It's Spyro's Adventure for the online bit and it's as befuzzled said. Click on the play version and you can enter the codes that come with the figures.
I agree about the violence bit too. I don't like some of the characters toting big guns about (and I'm from the pro shooting lot) and maybe the themes such as "undead" are a bit much. DS is so delighted with it though and he's quite a tame child (likes the Nintendo dogs game more than any others).I think he just loves the fact the characters come to life on the screen.

roastparsnipsandbrusselsprouts · 02/01/2012 18:03

Thank you Nothingold I did wonder what the codes were for. Luckily I have kept it all in a tub beside the wii with all the characters in it.

Do anyone else's dcs play with the characters just as toys? Ds does but I am always a bit anxious that they disappear into the house and aren't around for the game - hence the box so he knows where to put them in theory.

worriermum · 02/01/2012 18:13

Thanks parsnips, I was thinking of putting a pack away (despite funds being sickly rather than healthy, but once I have bought the game I may as well do it properly). Any one pack better than another ? And do packs work out cheaper than buying single figures at a time ?

I'll be thrilled if DS plays with the characters as action-figure type toys !

My ds plays with the characters as action figures as well as playing on the online game. I'm sure it will go down well :)

Have you seen the stickers and poster too? Our wii one came with a poster that the DSs have put up in their bedroom - then each character comes with a sticker that you can put on each character to show the ones you have to mark them off - although this of course highlights to them how many more there are .....

I have told mine they will not be getting every single one (32 I think plus extra packs!) - but that one of each colour and a couple of adventure packs might be a realistic expectation (they already have 5 from Xmas and post-xmas birthday).

roastparsnipsandbrusselsprouts · 03/01/2012 11:05

We have got the poster but I didn't put it up. Ds is an avid collector of things and, as you said, would be on a mission to get them all. Your idea for one from each category makes sense. I will pay close attention if we buy more but unless ds uses his birthday or Christmas money for some it will be a long time until we do.

LynetteScavo · 03/01/2012 17:13

Ha! Just asked DSif he got stickers and poster - he looked in the box indeed they are there!

He is now counting how many more figures he needs. 29 more, apparently.

29 X £7 = £203 Grin (I think, I did that in my had Hmm)

myBOYSareBONKERS · 03/01/2012 21:36

My ds (age 8) loves it. He has 10 figures now. He has just discovered that it can also interact with the computer which is great.

I have "heard" Wink that in the future they are planning to bring out more levels that will link with the current game via another USB port (that we will have to buy of course )

THank you all you lovely MN'ers who advised me. 'Twas the birthday yesterday and DS duly received his new Wii and the skylanders game. He does love the game but to be honest it has not been his favourite one, despite being by far the most expensive.

The Wii came bundled with Mario Kart, and the extra remote I bought came with a free Wii Sports REsort game. Plus his godmother bought him 'Mario and Sonic at the Olympics' . We've had children ranging from 6 to 13 here yesterday and again today and so far the Sports Resort game, followed by Mario at the Olympics, have been the most popular. I'm posting in case this is of use to other MN'ers who want to do the Wii thing but, like me, have no clue about what to get.

One more piece of info that would have been of use to me: in order to play Skylanders you need both a Wii remote and a Wii nunchuck. So despite buying an extra remote, he couldnt play Skylanders with his friends as we only have one Nunchuck (which game with the Wii itself)

worriermum · 08/01/2012 17:13

...which CAME with the Wii itself !

He might get more into the Skylanders game once he gets more familiar with the Wii. Mario Kart, Sports Resort and Olympics games are great and very accessible as first Wii games as you can just pick up, play and get immediate enjoyment from them.

Skylanders (and games like Mario Galaxy and Fifa) are a bit harder to get the hang of, so don't worry, he'll probably get into it later.

Well, I got my son this for the Wii for xmas. He requested it. he is 6, almost 7. I did see somewhere it is recommended for over tens, so was worried he was too young for it. When he opened it, he loved it- but then after playing for an hour i could see he was disappointed and it seemed difficult, so he played his new sonic and kirby games instead. However, he then played a couple of weeks later with his friend- who showed him you can get your characters 'upgrades' meaning you can complete challenges and now he loves the game. He wants to play every day. The problem I have, is that they need all these characters to go with it. he got 3 with the game and portal, and his sister bought him an extra for xmas. Once they had all 'died' and he needed another to complete some sort of quest, we dutifully agreed to go to toys r us to get a new one. They are only £6.99, and i quite like the idea of one as an occasional treat/reward/bribe as they arent too big or expensive! However, they were sold out...we then travelled to tesco/asda/ sainsburys plus all thinkable computer stores, and checked argos for all shops within 50 miles online and all were entirely sold out. Yesterday morning, we were in toysrus and they put a rackfull out- what luck! SO he got one, and i secretly purchased another, ready for when he next wants one- incase its still hard to find them. They put out around twenty characters plus a sign limiting 2 per customer. They were all gone within 5 minutes. Crazy. I did not anticipate that. He has asked for the adventure pack for his birthday in february. I sincerely hope by then that supply has caught up with demand by then...he asked for a pegasus/unicorn one too i saw that on amazon or somewhere for $150!! So watch out for this...if you can get hold of an extra character or two for the £6.99 they are in shops, get them in advance...if you get hold of the unicorn i recommend keeping it out of your childs eyesight and putting it on ebay!! That would pay for the game itself! Definately not too 'babyish' for your seven year old, i think six and seven prob the youngest they can properly play...the warning says its cartoon violence suited to voer twns and plenty of eleven year olds are enjoying this. my girls are almost ten and twelve and not into this kind of game as they are girly, but they quite like the portal and charaters...even I find that interesting, slightly. A great toy, a great present all round just prepare for needing characters as they do 'die' and some are needed for specific quests as each possesses different strengths.you get a poster with the game too with all the characters on, to help the kids know who they do and dont have...xx

Ds is 7 and he loves it. He has always liked gormitti figures and they are quite similar.
