Toy advice for an almost 1 year old

DD is 11 mo and it's just occurred to me that we haven't actually bought her much for Christmas. I'm not too concerned because she has lots of presents from other people and it's her birthday in January. However, I might nip out tomorrow and get her something else.

I was looking at Duplo bricks and noticed that the recommended age range is 2 to 5 years.

Do you think this is for safety reasons? Might a 1 year old swallow the parts or is it a question of developing the required co-ordination?

Duplo tend to be pretty big blocks - I would say it's more likely to be the co-ordination needed to stick them together - they need to line up.

That's ok then. something she can learn rather than something that can kill her.

Always an advantage! Xmas Grin

Mega blocks are bigger and more suited to younger ones, but 11m might still be a bit young to get any use out of them TBH. They wn't notice anyway and will want to play with the boxes I am a total hypocrite who buys far too much every year even though they break or lose it before they are old enough to play with it properly

I brought out the duplo for ds3 when he was about 11m and found that I was just picking them up off the floor constantly as his favourite game seemed to be "tip all the bricks out of the bucket"! I have put them away for now and will try again in a couple of months (he us now 15 months).

I think it's a combination of co-ordination and incase she might catch her fingers in the gaps and pinch her skin so I'd go careful with them. I had thought about getting some for my son who is only a few months older. How about a little shopping trolley or musical instruments or bath toys? They are things that she can learn to play with in different ways so you really get your money's worth. Xmas Smile

I think the age stuff is usually way out.

We got dd a plastic postbox from elc for first Xmas. It's for age 18month plus. She was 1 week old. But she's played with it since she was about 6 months and all my friend's toddlers love it to.

She got a brio train set for 1st bday and likes it even though it's for 18 months plus.

She also got plastic toy fruit and veg for aged 3 up and loves that. But we've removed the smaller bits.

Although of course her favourite thing ever is cheapo stacking cups.

If you're still looking, my DD2's favourite ever toy is the ELC Happyland double decker bus. She got it for her 1st birthday and will literally spend all day putting the people in, taking them out, pushing the bus around. Perfect size for little hands.

She also loves babies- putting them to bed, pushing them round in the pushchair etc.

We have duplo too that belongs to DD1, but all DD2 does with it is throw it around!

I bought a set from ASDA 1.5-5yrs? Animal duplo I think. Also noticed it had been reduced this week! :(

Decided not to go anywhere near a toy shop today but thank you everyone for your responses. I'd seen the Happyland things and thought they looked great so might get some of that for her birthday instead - spoil her after Christmas :)

I also worked out that I'd be spending a lot of time picking bricks up - even if I kept it aside until the summer, so probably will avoid the duplo, all things considered. Thank you everyone for your suggestions.
