Vegetarian pigs in blankets?

We are having a "Christmas" style dinner on Christmas Eve as we are having something different on Christmas day with our wider family.

I wanted to give my veggie dcs an idea what a traditional Christmas dinner would be like but can't get my head around the pigs in blankets part of it.

Any ideas for veggie pigs in blankets?

I have Quorn bacon and big Quorn sausages but didn't think that would be quite the same and couldn't find veggie cocktail sausages.

I love bacon wrapped around bananas. Often serve it instead of pigs in blankets. Would that work with Quorn bacon? I just cut the banana into three pieces and put a bit of lemon juice in, and then do it the same as with a sausage.

roastparsnipsandbrusselsprouts · 22/12/2011 19:53

How do you cook that then London? I have never cooked a meat sausage iykwim. Do you bake it in the oven or fry it?

You can get veggie frankfurter sausages that might work better with the veggie bacon around them.

To be honest the bacon/banana combo sounds a bit Xmas Confused

I have veggie frankfurters actually. I forgot about them as I can't personally stomach them (bleurgh) but the dcs love them. That could work. Thanks Selks.

I am intrigued by the banana as my dmum used to make a lovely chicken rissotto with cheese and banana and although it sounds vile it was delicious (pre veggie days of course).

I'm not sure if Quorn bacon would work as it goes quite brittle when cooked so probably not great for wrapping. And Quorn have stopped doing their cocktail sausages, for some reason.

What about just doing homemade veggie sausages? I'm thinking mini Glamorgan sausages, like this. Maybe you could chop a bit of Quorn bacon into the mix to give it a bacony flavour. Or maybe that would just be weird!

Those sausages sound lovely - Yum!

I know what you mean about Quorn bacon. It also has a bit of a lingering after taste, like Frazzles Xmas Blush
(Can you tell I am not a meat lover, even in substitute?)

You would have thought that Quorn would have seen the gap in the market and catered accordingly.

We used to make them with quorn bacon wrapped around handmade sos-mix cocktail sausages.

spottyscarf · 22/12/2011 20:36

Yuk I hate quorn bacon- you are right, it just tastes like frazzles to me. In fact any of the quorn stuff that pretends to be something it's not, like the fake ham, fake fish or fake 'roast' (like a tube of spam). I do quite like their sausages and quorn chunks for stirfry though.

Why not just do the sausages?

KinkyDoritoWithFairyLightsOn · 22/12/2011 20:37

Quorn were making cocktail sausages to buy from the chiller cabinet at one point.

I'm cutting up quorn sausages.

roastparsnipsandbrusselsprouts · 22/12/2011 20:37

I was thinking about that Kinky as I have sos-mix for making sausage rolls. How did you cook them?

Wasn't me who cooked them! My DMum does them every year.

I believe she made the sausages, wrapped them in defrosted bacon then I'm guessing oven for 20minutes.

I'm ringing her in a bit so I'll check for you.

roastparsnipsandbrusselsprouts · 22/12/2011 20:39

They used to make the little cocktail sausages and it solved many a mixed meat and non meat eater dilema for me. Clearly it didn't compete with Brandy butter and Brie for space on the shelves this Christmas.

I am naughty, stealing DMum's creative thunder...

Thanks Kinky Xmas Smile

Vegetarian is always the first to go. My Tesco currently has quorn deli and tofu, and that's about it. Plenty of filo-wrapped prawns and mini fish and chips though!!

tabulahrasa · 22/12/2011 20:41

you could get quorn cocktail sausages...I haven't seen them in a while though, I usually just use big ones, lol.

Holland and barret do cocktail sausages as well.

I do them in the oven, just the same as I would without wrapping them in quorn bacon.

whomovedmychocolate · 22/12/2011 20:44

I used to do veggie sausages with (precooked) lasagne wrapped round them. You have to spread red pesto on the lasagne though to glue them and also make them taste lovely. Also cocktail sticks required to hold them together till cooked.

roastparsnipsandbrusselsprouts · 22/12/2011 21:06

I am glad I am not alone in this. I don't remember ever having a pig in a blanket when I was forced to be a meat eater but now I am frantic to make sure the dcs have a clue what it is all about.

Sainsbury's have bags of linda Mccartney cocktail sausages in the freezer section. I've bought 4 bags to keep us going for a while.

I have bought a pack thing from H&B for OH's christmas dinner but I have so much veggie food in her can have the pick of almost anything.

LondonMumsie · 22/12/2011 21:36

Re bacon wrapped around bananas, once I'd chopped, lemon juiced and wrapped, I just pinned them together with toothpicks and grilled them. I don't know how Quorn bacon would work, but meat bacon gives off enough fat to not need any extra. I suppose you could use spray oil instead as I am guessing quorn is less fatty? (if it would work at all, as others suggest it might not).

roastparsnipsandbrusselsprouts · 22/12/2011 21:48

Thanks London, as I said, I am intrigued by that one.
