I want to be a bit prepared for that lull when we are full and have had enough of christmas tv and I love games! Xmas Smile
I know that lots of games that come in a fancy box can actually be done without the box but just need a bit of setting up.
My memory is rubbish so wondered if anyone had come across any websites/or have good instructions that detail how to play these games... e.g. name these things beginning with a particular letter of the alphabet, pictionary, a list of things to use in charades.
thanks

Articulate is a brilliant game which could be made yourself if you could be bothered.

My sister in law is great at coming up with these for family meals:

  • the roll a dice to get a "6" put on scarf and gloves and try cutting slices off a mars bar till someone else gets a "6"
  • Have a tall cereal box and you have to stand with your hands behind your back, bend over and lift up box with your teeth. Then cut the height of box in half and see who can still do it, then take the height of the box down a bit at a time till only an inch left. Surprisingly those who do yoga (sil) or my short flexible mum in her 60's can beat the kids at this one.
  • the 12 items on a tray, look at for a minute then take tray away and everyone has to write down what is on it.
  • get several of the same newspaper and split into teams. Then someone picks a headline and everyone has to search their paper for the right page to match the headline and hand it to the person reading out. Team with most right wins.

Will try and think of some others.

Flour jenga is always fun (although can be a wee bit messy!)

Use a flat plate or chopping board. Put a heap of flour on it then stick a match stick in the top of the heap (so it's sticking up vertically iyswim).

Each person takes it in turn to cut away a section of flour with a knife (a blunt butter knife or similar is fine to use)...you lose if the match falls.

So you can be a wimp and cut a tiny section of flour away or be bold and cut almost half of it..making it harder for the person after you but also more risky for yourself.

Forgot to say with cereal box game, idea is that when you bend over to pick up box you are not allowed to bend your knees at all!

some great ideas - thanks all - fresh your sister sounds like people I know and was trying to remember some things that have been done in the past

I'd forgotten about the cereal box game - that's a good one - gonna go check there's a box we can use on standby...
I like the idea of flour jenga!

What's the principles behind Articulate?

Some good ones from the guys at work...

Scrabulous - define 10 categories, e.g. a vegetable, country, sport etc. and then quizmaster sets a letter of alphabet. Only get a point if no one else has same answer as you

After eight game - slap an after eight to your forehead and you have to eat it without using your hands! (I've done that before and its hilarious - off to find after eights!)
