Bit annoyed as they didn't say the books were not in stock and when I've called a few branches to get the books they are double the price in store and not eligible for the online discount. Not that they have them in store either

So, I shall have to cancel the order and think of two new gifts to buy my sister and husband and my mum and dad. Do you have any good 'emergency' presents that could fill the gap!?!

I was doing so well too...

amazon? or is it too late for them now?

HamblesHandbag · 20/12/2011 17:44

Amazon deliver next day? (so prob Friday now) but obviously, you pay extra.

Anyway, who's it for and what do they like??

It's so annoying as it was a toss up between them and another company- cursors.

I've tried to do the amazon thing- but their web page for the super saver / postage option is down-of course it is!! Thanks for suggesting it anyway - good to know.

So, I'll have to get substitute presents tomorrow....arghh. Any ideas? (they are not really into anything, hence why I got books first time around!). Joy!

Wander into Waterstones and browse until you find something moderately appropriate? Posh food/booze?

joymaker · 21/12/2011 07:42

I bought some books from Waterstones this Christmas for my DS I had to wait five days before I could collect them because they were not in stock, PLUS I paid the full RRP price only to find that they were considerably cheaper on Amazon! I'm all for supporting high street shops but don't find W/stones competitive at all (though to be fair, the service by staff is always good) Sorry rant over!

joymaker · 21/12/2011 07:45

Could you get something that my compliment the content/theme of the books for when they eventually arrive?

spikemomma · 21/12/2011 18:36

Thanks everyone. Eeeh Christmas wobbles ey...

A local independent bookseller if you have one? They can often get things overnight, so you may have a chance of getting it by Christmas Eve.

Lovely food always goes down well. Gorgeous chocolates, a lovely tin of biscuits, a nice bottle of wine or port, some cheese. Dh and I often do little hampers if we don't know what else to buy - it looks like tonnes more effort than just wrapping up choccies, but wasn't much more than a rummage around Waitrose (which is great for this sort of stuff) and a fancily dolled up shoe box (lay the stuff on tissue paper, tie a big bow around it). I bought my dad a tin of pilchards one Christmas in a last minute panic because a) he loves them but never has them because mum hates them and b) they were in a really beautiful tin. Cost me about a quid and really were his favourite Christmas present!

Grrrrr to Waterstones. I ordered a book from them in June, and it still hasn't arrived. Every so often they send me a non-helpful email saying it's still on order, although when I initially ordered it seemed to be in stock.

I used the points on my waterstones card too, and they've never refunded me those! Despite a couple of emails from me, which have been ignored.

They don't seem too bothered about customer service, I'd defo look for an alternative...

fivegomadindorset · 21/12/2011 18:55

I know it is too late but I don't order anything from Waterstones, I ordered something for DH last summer so 18 months ago, 6 weeks it took.

scrappydappydoo · 21/12/2011 18:57

What were the books? Is there any chance you could get them from a large supermarket? They often have bestsellers at good prices?? Tescos is pretty good - you can order from the direct site and have stuff delivered to store next day.

Sainsburys have a lot of there christmas gifts on sale right now - booze, beauty sets and clothing as well - scarfs, hats, bags etc
