How much would you spend on food/alcohol/ groceries for a family of five adults and one child for Christmas Eve meal/Christmas Day food then a Boxing day buffet with four more relatives popping into eat.

I need to know if I have overspent or not. I am a tad anxious as have had raised eyebrows over the amount from relatives.

Apologies if this thread has popped up somewhere else, I thought I had posted but can't seem to find it

hmm i don't normally spend much over our usual food budget tbh although I can see how it could easily be done.

we have 2 adults and 3 kids and will spend under £100 for the week including christmas

so I would say for 3 days for 5 adults and a child, and 4 extras on one of the days maybe... oooh... £100 for that? relaly depends what you're eating though. We're veggie and I know big turkeys can be very expensive, so my estimate may be way off

Oh god, this is embarrassing. We spent over £300 in Costco today (although most of that was on big bulk items - loo rolls/nappies/tea bags/washing liquid etc - that will last us for months as well as a few Christmas bits); have just completed Tesco online order for £150 (enough food for at least a week, probably more) and we have ordered a ham, turkey, sausages etc from our local butcher for around £50. I'm on maternity leave so DP is doing a lot of sighing!

Clandy · 19/12/2011 19:54

Wow! £500 I am impressed Grin

CherrysOnTheNaughtyList · 19/12/2011 20:13

i usually spend at least £250, sometimes more, but that is to feed 7-10 on christmas day and anything up to 15 on boxing day. that doesnt include my meat though, which this year has cost me £46.

This thread is making me feel slightly better. I just spent £170 but that's for the whole week. Still got to go to Farmers Market for veg though.

AKMD · 19/12/2011 20:29

Oh dear. I've got 8 people for Christmas and my running total is about £130 just for that day Blush

worm77daisy · 19/12/2011 20:41

I would say for not using saver brands and a fresh turkey probably £500 too. this is what is cost us for Christmas catering last year for similar numbers. People don't realise until they try and do it themselves. I am astounded by £100 estimate.

GreyRosesAreMyFavourite · 19/12/2011 20:47

I've just done a Pre-Christmas dinner for family and spent £100 on smoked fish, £60 on venison and £150 on ocado. The leftovers will last us the next few days... But still! Catering for 10+ people with nice food is not cheap. You want something different to mince for a special meal.... But I would never go into debt for Christmas.

Rikalaily · 19/12/2011 21:20

For that many people, 2 special meals, a buffet and booze, I would say probably about £400 minimum. For our usual shop for 2 adults 4 kids we spend around £150 a week, easily £200+ for Christmas week and thats just Christmas dinner with treats throw in for the week, the only alcohol we would get would be 1 case of beer for dp and 1 bottle of wine for me.

Thingiebob · 19/12/2011 21:20

I'm astounded by the £100 estimate as well.

So far for food/alcohol and groceries, some of which will last us for the rest of the week, I have spent £150 quid. This does include a turkey crown and a few bottles of nice wine, plus baby milk.

My family think this is a lot and I still haven't bought the sprouts, any cheese or any fruit!

Phew! Not just me then. I feel better.

Rikalaily · 20/12/2011 10:59

Seriously, they think £150 is alot? I spend that on a normal weeks shopping, you have done amazingly well!

Tiggles · 20/12/2011 13:22

Wow £100 on a turkey!! We spent £6 on a large chicken Xmas Blush mainly as kids eat chicken, and DH isn't fussed either way. I think for food (Christmas dinner, and then a 'nice' tea, wine, baileys and crackers just for Christmas day I have spent about £50 max. for a family of 5.

gregssausageroll · 20/12/2011 13:28

Um, a lot. I have not added it up yet but 3 of us on Christmas Day plus 19 on Boxing Day, wine, food, nibbles, crackers and all the extra bits probably about £400.

I do spent a lot on meat though. Lamb for Christmas Day is £20 and Beef for boxing day is £65. Gammon to do Nigella's ham is £15.

msbaublestwinkle · 20/12/2011 13:32

For Christmas week for 2 adults, 2 children (I'm not counting the baby) we have spent about £150, so I agree that good food for that many could quite easily be £400.

cwtch4967 · 20/12/2011 14:16

Wow - i am gobsmaked at how much people spend on food! My mum and I are catering a church party tomorrow for 35 people and have spent under 150 for food and drink. We are making most things from scratch ourselves - but that also includes 7 bottles of cava and soft drinks!!

We've got 4 adults and 2 kids to feed and I've just spent £100 on our online shop including the trimmings for the main meals and treats. I'll need to get a few bits locally and the meat on top of that. We don't drink though which has kept the bill down.
