I don't have any, DH forgot. Is there anything I could use instead? Strawberry Jam, Nutella, Marmite...?

Strawberry jam will be fine... or you could just go and buy some Wink

I used membrillo [ponce]

I could just go buy some but I am still in Pjs and I was hoping to ice the cake, and then go out for a nice long, smug walk in the frost Xmas Smile

Strawberry is good, I have strawberry. Now, please hold me hand and tell me that this, the first time I am using marzipan/fondant for my first ever Christmas cake for my entire family, will be a breeze!

I always use strawberry because I prefer the taste, as long as it is sticky it will be fine. If you want a smooth top, turn the cake upside down, you will need to cut some of the top (now bottom) off to make it stable, but we all know that scraps contain no calories, so that's ok to eat!

Honey is also yummy

DaisySteiner · 18/12/2011 10:31

I use golden syrup warmed with a bit of water. Works v. well.

JingleBelleDameSansMerci · 18/12/2011 10:34

I can ice without marzipan, can't I? Never tried without before...

DaisySteiner · 18/12/2011 10:43

I don't know why anyone would want to leave the marzipan off Wink, but yes, it should be fine Grin

I use strawberry, you may have to scoop the odd lump out or buy seedless raspberry if I'm organised. I don't like apricot. DH loves it, I save it for his toastGrin
