SIL with new baby help please!

My SIL had a baby a couple of weeks ago and I need to find her a gift on the high street by Saturday for gift exchanging but I'm completely stuck!

I don't want to buy her something baby related but also need to acknowledge in my gift that she has had a baby if you see what I mean?

I was thinking about a bag but then realised that she wouldn't be using it for a while, gift cards are out as she lives in a different country, make up and toiletries wouldn't suit because she is very picky about which products she uses, she doesn't wear scarves, I don't want to buy chocs or alcohol in case she is avoiding those, jewellery probably wouldn't be a good idea with a new baby either...

Can anyone help please? I have a budget of £10-15 and would really appreciate any ideas, especially things that you would have liked after having a new baby (I'm PG with first so have no idea!)

Thank you in advance!

A bottle of champagne will keep, of course (given a chance) ...

How about a picture frame for a photo of the new additon?

A really nice notebook / pen which she can use to write down all the baby's milestones? If she's breastfeeding, a book to read while she's feeding? Decent waterproof gloves for pushing the pram around through the winter. Slippers/slipper socks if she's going to be at home more now than previously? I live in my slippers at home in the winter now and they wear out quickly.

The picture frame is a good idea and I love the idea of the slippers - her flat is all wooden floors and tiles so I imagine her feet will freeze when feeding! She isn't much of a reader but I know she likes a couple of a magazines so I'll have a look at subscriptions - thank you!

I have just bought loads of mugs from John Lewis. I know it sounds boring, but they are lovely. Mugs, and nice tea.

Thank you for all the suggestions everyone! I think I'm going to go with a comedy DVD so that she can have some me time when baby is asleep (or when she is breastfeeding) and a photo album or frame for recording all the special moments they'll have over the next few months. I did find some lovely slippers but everybody seems to have sold out in her size!
Thank you so much for all your help - I was beginning to panic there!

A huge snuggly warm dressing gown for those 3am feeds when its freezing?

A good dvd series for all those nights in is a good idea. We had the Fry & Laurie Jeeves & Wooster one for DS1 and the ITV Sherlock Holmes for DS2!

You might think jewellery isn't a good idea, but a nice pair of stud earrings might be appreciated - all my earrings were dangly ones, and I had to give up wearing them when tiny grabby baby hands started to explore :(

mummymccar · 15/12/2011 16:14

Peanuts - That was my first thought but her mum and dad have beaten me to that one! Xmas Smile

Flisspaps - It's the dangly earrings I was worried about, I'll have a little look at studs though, thanks!

How about a posh handcream? Chanel is lovely, as is the Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream one.
