I know it may sound bonkers/pathetic to ask strangers for recommendations, but honestly, this year I'm at a total loss. We've been together nearly 12 years and I feel like I've used up all my inspiration - all the things I know he'd like I've gone ahead and bought over the years, and though clearly ideas/presents are not finite, it certainly feels like it. So, though I understand if you simply tsk and wander off, any suggestions would be fab.

He is mid-40s, very into books (non-fiction, history, memoirs), food - both cooking at home and nice restaurants, likes old movies, hates sport of almost any description apart from cricket, likes gadgets (does any man not like gadgets), totally adores music/his iPod/vast iTunes library/CD collection, etc, is a trivia/quiz king, is quite into clothes but isn't especially trendy, IYSWIM (more of a classic dresser), is a very hands-on dad to 3YO DD, er... does that say anything to anyone? Anyone been inspired by presents for their OH this year and want to share the inspiration?

there's a new max hastings world war 2 book out that's getting good reviews and is about half price on amazon, lots of different recollections about the war from all over the world -'all hell let lose'

oh and the other present dh (similar age) loved recently was a little robot clock from paperchase that sits on his desk, arms and legs move, clock on his tummy, hands can hold a pen. sort of retro, just something nice about it. about £15.

just looked - it's this but dh has it in red (not on the website) rather than black

bean612 · 14/12/2011 14:38

Oh zipzap, that Max Hastings book idea is genius, you are clever. I even knew about it too (I work in books) but had forgotten it was out - he would love it and I might even read it too. Thanks! Alarm clock looks v cute but I have given him similar in the past - and these days DD is the only alarm clock we need (5.15 on the dot most mornings - yawn...)

I'm not sure if any of these will fit your dh but things I've got for the men in my life this Christmas are:-

posh cheese & biscuit hamper
drill bits
guitar case
smellies
thermal socks
body warmer
shoes from Crew Clothing (they do quite classic stuff which might be worth a look)
Andy Mcnab books - SAS type stories
sodadtream
electric razor
nose hair trimmer Blush
DVD's
gloves for iphone
PJ bottoms
posh coffee glasses
san miguel beer glasses
nice coffee to go with coffee machine
sweets

actually that list looks pretty boring but I know the receipients will like the things.

JennyPiccolo · 14/12/2011 16:31

i got this for my dad, a total bargain for real leather. it arrived today and it's nicer than the picture.

For DP, both pearl jam and nirvana have 20 years collector DVD things out, so if your DH was into the grunge scene at any point that might be a good shout.

itsstartingtofeelalotlikexmas · 14/12/2011 16:33

I've got mine the Star Wars films on blu ray, about 49.99 on amazon

SnowmanDaveIsVeryFestive · 14/12/2011 16:37

Beer making kit?

3become4 · 14/12/2011 16:38

Wisden Almanac? Subscription to The Cricketer? Subscription to Private Eye? Ride-a-Dad t-shirt from Twisted Twee?!

Any help?

Checkmate · 14/12/2011 16:39

Would he like a kindle? I'm a big reader, and I still love proper books and buy lots of them, but its quite nice to have an ebook reader as well, for holidays, train journeys etc..

Does he have a docking station for his ipod? (I'm getting DH an apple keyboard which is a docking station for his ipad.)

georgeclooneyfan · 14/12/2011 16:42

My husband is mid 40's got him:

Kindle and John Bishop tickets????? not sure if he will like either

StuckInTheFensAwayFromHome · 14/12/2011 16:48

What about tickets (or a home made voucher if they can't be prebought) to a historical castle/museum/day out to somewhere he's always wanted to go to. e.g. Tower of London, Jorvik viking musuem, etc.
Either something you can do locally, or it becomes part of a family day/weekend trip...

hambo · 14/12/2011 18:19

MAP

You can get an old map made of the place where you met/he proposed/ first kiss/ place he grew up?? Quite romantic?

I am getting DH a hamper of his most fav food as I can never get him a pressie that he wants...(already got him a map of where he was born!!)

yellowflowers · 14/12/2011 19:25

My dh likes cooking too and previous winners have been a meat tenderiser and a recipe book stand

bean612 · 14/12/2011 21:40

Oh gosh, just come back online to see all these fab ideas - thank you! Will look through them all right now...

I've got DH a pair of socks and a book of 'love' cheques!

TheGashlycrumbTinies · 14/12/2011 21:53

Sounds like you have described my husband :)
Here's what I have for him:
Original HB A Wonderful Life
Emma Bridgewater "A Year in the Country" mug 2011 (Just moved to our dream house)
Crabtree and Evelyn solid shaving soap in wooden dish
Professional cheese knife set
Fruit and Nut giant chocolate bar
An old pack of playing cards from Vegas, each one has been written on by me and both DD's, something we love about him, so a little box of 52 reasons why he is loved.
Am in the middle of making a picture, made of three small heart shaped cut outs of maps, one where we met, one where we married and one where we now live.
Lee Evans DVD

bean612 · 14/12/2011 22:59

sweetheart, thank you for lovely long list - gloves for iPhone are a good one (well he doesn't have an iPhone but does have an iPod Touch, so same problem with woolly fingers!). Posh cheese could be good too.

JennyPiccolo that is a REALLY nice bag! Unfortunately we're a bit bag-tastic in this house already, which is a shame cos it looks like a really nice present.

Sadly he's not a grunge/Star Wars fan, and though I like the beer-making kit idea I just know that he/we would never quite get round to actually doing it.

3become4 now subscriptions are an idea - he's an avid Car magazine reader but I've got him subscriptions to that in the past. Will have a think. I like the Ride-a-Dad T-shirt! Only thing is his back has been a bit ropey in the past, so think it might be asking for trouble Xmas Wink

He does have a docking station (two, in fact - see I told you he liked his iPod!) and ah, the old Kindle debate... It should be the perfect present for him, especially as we both work in the book industry, but he hates Amazon (for work-related reasons - as do I in principle, but I am far weaker morally and am seduced by the convenience and low prices [fgrin[) and thus a Kindle is out (since you can only buy books from Amazon for it). There are other ereaders out there, I know, but I used to have one for work and he never seemed that interested in getting one for himself. Even though he should want one...

Home-made love cheques, vouchers for things, etc - absolutely, I had thought about making one for him, a sort of 'perfect day' type thing, starting with breakfast in bed and going on to include lots of his favourite things. Might still do that actually anyway.

hambo - both great ideas, though sadly the Map website only seems to cover Scotland, and we're in England, pah. Like the 'Child's quote' idea though. And the hamper idea. Like that one a lot, actually.

yellowflowers - had thought of a recipe book stand in the past, but forgotten about it - thanks for reminding me! Where did you get yours, out of interest?

Boiledegg - you are clearly the perfect wife! Xmas Wink What lovely things your DH is getting. I wish I had that kind of creatively thinking mind when it comes to presents. I LOVE your map idea - part of me would feel guilty about stealing it, but part of me totally wants to. And you'd never know Grin Grin I also love cheese knives idea. And your mention of 'It's a Wonderful Life' (though HB - did you mean hardback, was it a book before the film?) has made me think of his fave film, 'A Matter of Life and Death', so I have found a movie poster which I will frame. Hurrah! Though it may not come before Christmas, so I still need back-up plans. If not I will give it to him for his birthday in the summer.

Thank you all - such fantastic thoughts. I love MN at times like this. Well, any time really.

I think I got it on amazon. It's a wooden one and says recipe on the front. Will look for it now and post link if I can find it.

yellowflowers · 15/12/2011 00:42

It wasn't this one but is similar

tokentotty · 15/12/2011 00:57

How abt checking out Leith's cookery school for a 'knife skills' course? If he's into food & cooking then that surely has to be the manliest thing out there. What man wouldn't love looking like a pro chef as he chops?

zipzap · 15/12/2011 01:33

If you think he will like maps, how about an old antique map of an area that is special to both of you? my dad used to collect antique county maps of his county, they're lovely and a real piece of history. And with the older ones you can start to see villages where names have changed or grown much bigger or smaller over time or even disappeared. You can also get route maps that were used for common routes (bit like we would use a googlemap printoff of a journey) which can be fascinating, especially if you can get a journey that you do lots or comes through your locality.

different end of the spectrum, 7dayshop - have an iphone charger double pack (one for a plug, one for the car) for £2 which I've just bought, I have one already but at that price it's cheap enough to have one upstairs and one downstairs rather than it always being in the wrong place, plus can have one in dh's car as well as mine. and a little laser pointer/torch for about £3 which looks like a good gadget plus could be handy if he ever does presentations at work. and is on one of those carabiner clips so fulfills all sorts of manly hang off the belt gadget needs. plus they have loads of other gadgets and fun stuff if you have a quick rummage.

there are those tshirts that play lights like a sound bar display - no idea how well they wash though!

check out play - they have been having some good discounts on clothes and gadgets. I missed the one that I was going to get for dh - a nice furry lined fleece hoodie that was £20 instead of £65 - lots of things come around several times but this hasn't Sad and they have sold out of it completely now (would have been extra nice as dc had furry lined fleece hoodies last year and they were great when we needed to go in the car when it was cold as dc1 in particular hates wearing a coat in his carseat and dh always used to say they looked nice and cosy!)

cricket set for playing with his dd?

charitygirl · 15/12/2011 04:46

Wine Society membership - they are great.

A case/half case of diff bottles of wine that you choose yourself - from meaningful places etc. Majestic have a big selection or use an online vintner

A pic of a face musician/author/icon - eBay has a massive range. Get it nicely framed.

A cooking course (one day ones are great) - the fish school at billingsgate is fab but there are so many options nation-wide). Thr WSET run great wine tasting days too.

My dad now only gets IOUs these days cos he's so difficult! I choose a nice restaurant I think he'll like, print out 'the menu and pop it in a card with a promise to book it. Goes downn v well!

TheGashlycrumbTinies · 15/12/2011 12:26

Bean please take any ideas, and yes I did mean hard back book.

It just made me smile when you described your DH, as he sounded so much like DH,

TheGashlycrumbTinies · 15/12/2011 12:27

Bean I meant your DH was younger! Xmas Blush

wakesandquakes · 15/12/2011 12:34

He's the right age, and he likes music, so this might be good as an add on to the list. Someone else recommended it, I've ordered it (and have now read it all!):
