I think I'd be inclined to go for a very basic normal sized one.

Sewing machines can last a good few years, and of she/he wants to use it for a school project at GCSE level or something it will be good to have normal size.

Unless you badly want one with a needle cover (which kids machines do, I think?). But it's more ore less impossible to get your finger under the needle anyway, and a 10yo should be smart enough not to try Grin

I have a brilliant machine that I bought from lidl a couple of years ago for around £60 and I've used it with a seven year old who found it very easy to use (under supervision).
Her parents then went on to buy her the little John Lewis machine (aimed at adults, lots of different colours) which was great for what she needed it for and was ok for mending and sewing in name tapes etc.
Personally I would go for a full size machine.

Normal size. She'll outgrow a mini one too soon
