Help me find some curling tongs/crimpers for dd?

dd (8) would love some crimpers/multi-styler for her hair, ideally pink girlie ones but most of those I've found so far look a bit ropey quality-wise so am I better to get her some proper grown-up ones?
She has had her hair curled at the hairdressers and has asked me to curl her hair at home but I am the world's worst hairdresser so failed miserably using my ghds (despite hours of practising) so whatever I buy needs to be very easy to use and effective. Any ideas?

Amazon
I can't curl my hair for toffe with tonges (sp) but I had a go with a curling wand and found it much easier! It won't crimp though. The curling wand in the link is a red babyliss one, they do a hot pink one as well but its an extra £10! Its on amazon too.

I bought my DD some curling tongs but they are crap !

I have seen the crimpers/multi-stylers and was pondering the same thing myself. I always worry about burning her head, or my fingers, so I was considering some of the heated roller type things ? Or the spongey ones, I think you can get them can't you ?

I was thinking at least with the spongey ones, you can curl as much or as little as you like !

Oreocrumbs, the curling wand looks good, thanks.

Mrschristmas, I think the multi stylers may be just trying to do too much so won't be any good really. Dds hair is very straight so I think she will need proper heat to curl it so spongey rollers won't owkr for her.

Ok, pop. Xmas Smile

My DDs hair is very fine, so doesn't seem to hold a curl very well. A hairdresser friend of mine recommended getting some of the 'top end' tongs but to be honest, I didn't want to spend loads !

You can get spongey rollers that can be heated. I think Boots have some Nicky Clarke ones. £20 approx. I think, and you get 20 in a set.

I was just thinking that they may be better than the risk of burning !

I would also worry that the curling wand may not get hot enough like some tongs, to create the curl and hold it ?

If you want rollers I wouldn't get the spongey ones IME they are a bit pants. What are quite good are the old fashioned carmen heated rollers but you need to be looking at car boots, maybe ebay etc! (The new ones are not as good)

If you live near a big shopping centre keep I'd eye out for people doing demos of the curling wands, I've seen them all over, they will style your DD's hair and you will get an idea of how suitable they are Xmas Smile

Thank you so much for that, oreo. Xmas Smile

It's good to get info like this from people, before I waste money again !

Are the curling wands really that good ? Better than tongs, I mean ?

What about cost, is it the dearer the better ?

oreocrumbs · 08/12/2011 22:14

I have cheapish ones as I go through fads. To be honest I don't think there would be a lot of difference, mine were £35 from a demo in a shopping centre, can't remember the name they arn't a well known brand (have lent them out or I would check for you).

I would'nt pay more than £20 for them, the ones in the link I posted seem ok. I have a lot of hair but its fine hair and I struggle to hold a curl, the trick I have found is wash, 3/4 dry, mousse, potter around for a bit to dry a bit more then curl and lots of hairspray.

I find the wand better than tongs as when I curl with tongs I get a kink at the root and a straight bit at the end Hmm. With the wand you just wind the hair around and the shaft is tapered so you can use the wider bit for a looser curl or the narrow bit for a tighter one.

Thank you so much for all the tips.

I will wander round a couple of my local shopping centres (I can get to a few !) and see what I find.

Tongs are very frustrating, I agree. I did resort to 'twisting' sections of DDs hair and then securing with a teeny hair band, which she slept with, to give a curl. The only trouble is, the curl then becomes very Shirley Temple, when she really wants 'waves', iyswim.

I've had a look on ebay and found some of the old carmen rollers I was talking about, there are a few on there. This is the type of thing I'm on about ebay

The babyliss curling wand is fantastic. I use it on my hair and occasionally on my 8 year old's. It does get really hot but holds the curl well.

MrsChristmasDB · 08/12/2011 22:47

Thank you oreo. I am all fingers and thumbs, I bet I wouldn't be able to do them properly !

The wands are sounding more and more appealing.

Sounds like my poor fingers may suffer. Xmas Smile
