Why do you celebrate Christmas?/What do you celebrate at Christmas?

Yes I know someone does it every year Xmas Grin

It's Jesus' birthday, and we celebrate it by being with the people we love and enjoying each others' company. This will involve food and presents and slobbing out in front of the TV for a post-pig out rest. Oh, and it will definitely involve spending ridiculous amounts of time attempting to free toys from their packaging while those little twisty bastard things make our fingers bleed. Merry Christmas :)

Sirzy · 07/12/2011 14:44

lol Chicken its the toys you need a screwdriver to unpack!

Xmasbaby11 · 07/12/2011 14:45

It's a British tradition

It's time off to spend and cherish with your loved ones and a chance to treat each other

babyonbord · 07/12/2011 14:45

my children, we don't much believe in anything in our house, we aren't really religious or spiritual, christmas is for my children and an excuse to spoil them rotten. I don't think i will be "celebrating" so much, just enjoying how happy my boys are while me and my dh get slowly drunk at my mother in laws, i may be celebrating not cooking this year come to think of it lol

babyonbord · 07/12/2011 14:49

god i hate those stupid twisty ties they are the bane of my life but i have been smart this year as i'm sure come christmas i will be too drunk by the time we get round to opening the tree presents to be physically capable of undoing them, so i have already freed all toys, loaded them with batteries and replaced (untied) in said boxes (now no longer taped shut with the copius amount of sellotape manufacturers seem to deem nessercary (can't spell that damn word)

PeppaPigHostage · 07/12/2011 14:52

For me Christmas is nothing to do with Christ, though it is still Christmas.

I think some people celebrate it as a religious festival and others celebrate it as a cultural festival.

For me, its all about family. A time to spend together, be thankful for what we have, think of those we've lost along the way and to ensure those still with you know how much they mean to you.

I can't find the quote, which is annoying, but Richard Dawkins once said something about enjoying carol concerts because he liked to observe the rituals of his tribe.

(observe in the way one observes holy days, not observe as in "look at")

YuleingFanjo · 07/12/2011 14:58

I get loads of time off work and it's always been celebrated in my family with food and presents so I celebrate it too.

I was raised catholic and my children are baptised and attend catholic school (we're in Ireland, the only schools for miles are all catholic so not much choice there but there is a lot of catholic doctrine taught in the school)

That said, I have no particular belief in the catholic scriptures, I'm sure some of it is true, some exaggerated and some purely fictional and I'm not overly bothered either way....

For me Christmas is about having survived midwinter and coming out the other side, it's about taking some time out from stress and allowing ourselves to have fun and eat well, it's about my children having a magical time, it's a chance to get tarted up and enjoy the company of my family.

When it comes to Christmas I'm far more pagan than catholic Grin
