We have a pre-xmas meal which we usually invite an old family friend to. However, we weren't sure if he was coming this year, so we invited a couple we haven't seen in ages, who were part of the same group of friends IYSWIM. But now the original friend is coming too, and I feel horrible about the fact that there is another couple, who live nearby, who were also part of the group who we haven't yet invited. Am I being really horrible if I don't invite them? With the family and the 3 friends we already have eight adults and two toddlers, we live in a flat with no table other than a fold down number which seats six, and a small crappy oven with which to cook a full xmas dinner, and I really don't see how to seat and feed the people already coming, let alone two more. But then I think how I would feel if several of the old crowd had got together for a meal just down the road, and didn't invite me, plus I really like them, and it would be fun to all be together.

What would you do?

I would invite them and have a different meal.

Yeah I think you are probably right. This is going to be stressful. So what can I feed 12 people, that's still xmassy but can be eaten sitting on the floor?

I'd do a buffet style meal with some Christmas specials like prawns and salmon

Angelswings · 04/12/2011 11:08

Even better, ask people to bring a dish . . . .

We are having a get together next weekend for 12 but I have a non sleeping 6 month old so we are going easy Christmassy.

I have ordered a glazed ham from the butchers, going to get fresh bread, cook a turkey and some stuffing and put it on the table for help yourself sandwiches, along with minced pies, Yule log, mulled wine, crackers, cheese and biscuits, crisps etc. Seems Christmassy to me and not too much trouble!

Grandhighpoohba · 04/12/2011 13:33

Ham sounds like a good idea, can boil and then glaze without tasking the oven too much.

The problem with a buffet is that I have nowhere to serve it - if I put the table up, there won't be room for the people!

Hmmm tricky one then. How about stew followed by Christmas pud then? Stew is nice and wintry and easy to make in vast amounts, maybe with mashed potatoes?

Or just do the buffet and put it in the kitchen for people to help themselves one at a time - keep the alcohol out to top up everyone's glasses though..

We used to have a tiny flat and people generally didn't mind things like that especially when getting free food and drink!

Do you have room in a bedroom for the table to go up? This is what we do at New Year.

I have the drinks in the kitchen and food in DD's bedroom and the living room is left clear for people to sit/stand around.

Grandhighpoohba · 04/12/2011 16:27

No, unfortunately the bedrooms are all tiny (and the downstairs one belongs to teenager, and I think we would be in trouble with environmental health if I put food in there)
