Hotel Chocolat - stuff is it nice or not?
Cheese Hamper ?
I want to get my sis stuff she won't spend money on like make up and perfume etc, so should I risk buying it, or just give her a voucher for Selfridges or somewhere?
And if by any small chance you know what I should get my dh then please please tell me.

I love hotel chocolat, so i'd appreciate that and the cheese hamper! Sounds good to me, as long as she's into those things!

shinybaubles · 30/11/2011 17:03

Thanks Lisa she loves cheese - had one of those cheese wedding cake things.

I'm not a chocolate person and I love Hotel Chocolat. The mix and match alcoholic truffles are very nice and they are doing a Christmas range but I haven't tried any of that.

Of she's a foodie you could do her a little basket with things she doesn't normally buy or get her a Waitrose voucher? Do you know what brand of make-up/perfume she likes so you could get her a specific voucher? I found my DSis' out (for DM) by telling her about the Credit Crunch thread topic about M&S knock-off perfume that smells like expensive brands and asking what hers was in case it is 'on the list' - for her own benefit, you understand Wink Perhaps a similar line could work wrt make-up too?

What does your DH like? I love thinking up presents for people :)

Lisa sending you virtual present right now Smile.

Rose that's food to hear another vote for Hotel Chocolat. I could choose the perfume fairly easily I think, but would be nervous in terms of colours for makeup - it's such a personal thing.

I'd stick with the cheese and choc, perfect combination me thinks!!

ObiWanWithBellsOn · 30/11/2011 18:15

Weirdly, Hotel Chocolat are doing cheese hamper type things this year.

I cannot tell you how disgusted surprised I was when I opened the flyer expecting to see chocolate and found pictures of cheese.

Obi I would also be disgusted but then I am no cheese lover.

For cheese, go to Paxton & Whitfield or Neal's Yard. P&W do a monthly scheme, I think, so your present lasts all year, or you could go traditional and send (the middle third of a) Stilton or a truckle of cheddar (I would love one of those). Anyway I am sure they l have plenty of gift ideas for you.

For chocolate H de C is OK but what about a Fortnum & Mason box of marrons glaces or something else traditionally Christmassy? Of course they sell delicious chocolates too.

For sis, give her a Jo Malone Voucher. If she doesn't find something in there that she likes, she is probably dead.

With the first of these suggestions, I think a large part of the fun of receiving them is the wrapping, not because it looks nice (though it does) but for the reminiscent-of-Bertie-Wooster joy of frequenting smart English institutions, even if not in person. Therefore, for your husband, I recomend:

  • the recently published book of PG Wodehouse's letters
  • something from Jermyn Street, ie a shirt from a v traditional shirt maker
  • anything from Geo. F. Trumper
  • Dr Harris' hangover cure
  • an antique magnifying glass or map or other curio.

As for my DH, I am getting him a Bonsai tree, plus the kit to look after it. But now I wish i'd looked for an antique map.

Thanks thereistheball.
Will look at those places you recommended for cheese.
My sister is a huge Jeeves and Wooster fan.
Thanks for all the tips.
