I could ask MIL but she thinks I'm useless in the kitchen as it is so would like to try and be grown up for once and manage to sort out the Christmas dinner shopping etc (she will still be in charge of cooking...).

How big a turkey/ how many kgs of potatoes/ carrots etc etc? and all the other things that always get forgotten about...

Can some organised person help me please! 12 or 13 adults and a couple of young kids (who don't each vegetables anyway...).

Thank you!

Hi,
Didn't want your post to go unanswered so will try - sorry if it's not very helpful!

We have roughly the same amount of people coming for dinner and I think I will be doing:-

1 turkey crown - about 1kg
1 other meat (think we're having lamb this year) again about a 1kg joint
Roast potato's - usually allow 3 or 4 per person which works out to about 20 - 25 potatos
Pigs in blankets - I buy them ready made and would allow 2 per person
Yorkshire puds - enough for 2 per person again
Stuffing - 1 large packet mix
Veg - Depends what veg you want to serve but ideas are
Carrots, probably 1.5 carrots each so probably a 1kg bag
brussel sprouts (can't stand them!!!) I'd allow about 5 per person
parsnips - I'd say probably 3 or 4 parsnips cut up into wedges would be enough.
cabbage? Probably 1 bag
broccoli - 2 stems would probably be enough
cauliflower - 1 or 2 depending on how popular it is.

I haven't included anything for starter or pudding, just thinking about the main course. We usually have things like pate on toast or prawn cocktail for starter and Christmas pudding, mince pies and clotted cream or maybe pavlova for pudding.

As you can probably tell from my list I'm a convienience girl, especially when catering for this many people so this might not be what you're looking for if you're going to make everything from scratch.

Would it help to think 2.2lbs to the kilo? I am showing my age now, but I can't visualise in kilos, but if I think a quarrter pound of meat per person and so on, I find I can work it out better.
I wouldn't have said 2kgs of meat was enough for 12 people though. If you picture a quarter pounder beef burger, you'd get 9 from 2kgs, and you don't really want to have to be rationing it slice by slice onto the plates.
And you can always have leftovers in sarnies for supper Grin

oops no you wouldn't I am having a senior moment - ignore me. 9 of each! doh!

Hi tvfriend,

im in a similar position in that im having my in laws for the first time and am cooking for 9 adults and 2 kids. i want to have plenty of food so i dont need to worry about dinner on boxing day and if anyone wants to nibble later on christmas day.
here's what im buying (ill come back to you with weights another day, dont know them right now, not a pro either, just know im buying roughly 2 bags of everything:

have ordered a 6-7 kilo good turkey from sainsburys (expensive but we will have enough left over for boxing day dinner and a big pot of turkey soup the following day if i boil the carcass for stock, if i can be bothered)
1 ham (mil bringing it cooked)
2 big bags of maris pipers - 1 to make roast potatoes, 1 to make mashed
2x already prepped sage and onion stuffing from sains just to be cooked in oven
2x already prepped pigs in blankets from sains just to be cooked in oven
2x bag of organic carrots
2x bag of sprouts
2x bag of parsnips
4x tub of chicken stock (for gravy, jamie olivers, looks good, watch the dvd)
2x jar of decent cranberry sauce ( no one likes it but me anyway)

1 bottle of red, 1 white, 2 bottles of cava, 1 baileys, lots of soft drinks and then all the other extras like mince pies, cheeses etc but i dont stress about all that, i buy bits every week and can get whatever last minute but i definitely plan my meal.

i will buy a big pate and some tubs of prawn marie rose from sains to put on rocket and that is basically my starter (with some fresh bread, real butter etc but again, i wont be stressing about starters)
my sils are bringing the desserts, maybe 3 - something chocolatey for kids, a cheesecake or trifle, apple pie - whatever, not bothered, they can choose.

i will focus on cooking my turkey well, making a good gravy and doing good roast potatoes. if they turn out well, it will be a success. the sains stuffing etc will be tastey. just make sure theyre hungry, then theyll really love your cooking! and keep their drink topped up.

i might cook my turkey on christmas eve so the day isnt too stressful for me but ill need to look into that cause im not prepared to ruin a £60 - £70 bird cause its dry but im sure there are little tricks to avoid a dry turkey. if i do cook it on xmas eve i will let it cool right down, make my gravy to perfection and then slice up turkey. once gravy is cold add some over sliced turkey, cover and put in fridge. reheat in oven slowly and thoroughly with tinfoil next day in time for roast potatoes been done and then bingo, that should be it!
who knows, we will see.

oh my god, i just lived out those whole 2 days in my head. im going mad over this (first timer cooking for inlaws)

mrsmplus3 · 28/11/2011 22:00

ps just re read my post and realised how little alcohol ive mentioned. my in laws are not big drinkers at all but i will make that 2x white wine and 2x red just in case. they will prob bring a bottle or 2 anyway.
also fresh coffee.
right ill stop obsessing now.
hope that was a help.

Thanks all!

Turkey ordered from butchers- 7kg- massive but lots of hungry teenage boys to feed (not mine!).
Ocado delivery and skeleton order booked so will take your tips and refine my order at a later date!
main problem is where to sit them all...
