My dd is 10 but has special needs and has been very ill, we are fortunate enough to have been given a grant from a charity to get her an i pad :)

we are keeping it for christmas

she loves talking tom (on my phone!) I know you can get drums, piano ect

any idea's what else? are they any apps for her learning? she can read a bit now, but very behind for her age. Suppose I am looking at idea's for a reception/yr 1 child (4-6)

thanks

There's quite a few drawing apps which would be good. I've got Glow Paint, which is basic but you can draw glowing pictures.

There's plenty of children's iBooks you can download and a lot of them are free.

Not sure about learning apps, but sure someone else will.

She's a very lucky girl Smile

Mine is too young for proper "learning" apps, but I have downloaded some books that I am very pleased with, in that I think the "interactive" element is high quality: Harold and the Purple Crayon and also the Sandra Boynton apps (Blue Hat, Green Hat is my favourite)

she is a lucky girl but more than deserves it :)

The Meningitis Trust gave us the grant, we have nearly lost DD a few times, she has been very poorly twice and had emergencey brain surgery 4 weeks ago.

She can't do many things her twin sister does but loves using an ipad at her special needs school, I cant wait! she will be so so excited :)

thanks so much for the idea's. I had a goggle this afternoon looks so fab :)

How exciting!

What about a favourite film or a couple of episodes of a loved tv programme?

We had 'Nativity' on the iPad for Christmas day last year and dd has watched it over (and over) again. it kept them occupied for a couple of hous in the morning, giving all the adults more the to sleep get dressed.

Could you ask school for some suggestions?

If she needs to practice phonics, Pocket Phonics is great but may be too low a level for her.

We have various episodes of Thomas, Peppa, etc.

Draw Race (a racing car game, good for practicing motor skills), Tetris, Leap Sheep, Bubbles, Cut the Rope are all good games.

Skype if she has any friends/relatives she can chat to.

Does she like photography? There are some good apps like Instagram and A basic Photoshop app.

She'll have lots of fun! Will you have to buy her sister one too now or will they share a bit?

As others have said fave tv programmes on the iPad are great for keeping DD quiet.

If your DD is a peppa fan then the peppa games are good, there are also some good drawing and colouring apps and there's a pet app where you look after a goldfish Etc

My ds is 6 and has my ipad during long car journeys. He loves two games - Angry Birds and Cut the Ropes. They are easy to play, and keep him amused.

You can download books and keep them on bookshelves, Disney comics etc.

I'm sure she'll have lot of fun. Invest in some headphones for it too.

VivaLeBeaver · 27/11/2011 19:03

The smurf game. Dd plays it a lot.

How does one download TV episodes, if I may ask??

Daftapath · 27/11/2011 19:26

Via iTunes Carole. You have to buy them the same way as films.

Daftapath · 27/11/2011 19:28

We also like iplayer and I used TV Catchup a lot to watch tv via wifi at home if everyone else is hogging the main tv.

Ds also loves pocket phonics, but he is only 2.5 so it may be a bit easy for her. However it does allow children to practice building CVC words and would be appropriate for the 4-6 year ds at the school work at. There are loads of other talking Tom style apps by the same people. Ds also enjoys puzzle games, matching pairs and a shape game. Basically search the app store for anything you are currently working on with her. There are loads if Maths and literacy apps.

CaroleService · 27/11/2011 20:04

Oh thank you. I have the iPlayer app, never thought to buy episodes but would be useful.
