Me: what will you be asking Santa for?
DS2: I would like a little house where you press a button and the doors open and close and open and close and open and close and open and...
Me: Oh, a transformer? Something that transforms into a different thing? Like a ship into a robot?
DS2: No, a little house.
Me: A little house transformer?
DS2: No, not a transformer, a little house with a button you press and the doors open and close and open and close and open and close and open and...
Me: that's very specific.
DS2: ... and close and open and close and you only have to press the button once not lots of times.
Me: mmm, Santa might find that one a bit hard, is there anything else you'd like?
DS2: No, I only want a little house with a button you press and the doors open and close and open and close and open and close and open and...

Help! He is 4.3 and finds it hard to adapt if things aren't how he expects.

Any suggestions as to something that would come near to meeting his criteria?

tibni it has two dials which have to be set to the right combination. You get to choose the combination when you first set up the safe, then you can't change it. The dials make a satisfying clicking sound and have some nice tactile resistance as you turn them round. Once you've opened the main safe by putting both dials on the correct setting, there's another little door to open inside, where you keep your playmobil gold bars and playmobil bank notes.

We got DS2 some playmobil police and robbers to go with it but as expected, he just obsessed with the safe and didn't do any imaginative small-world play :o Never mind, he's still in love with it 3 months after his birthday. He too has been very into doors since he was a baby. For a special treat, we let him go to the kitchen showroom in ikea!!

I got this postbox for baby DD last Christmas. Somehow, it ended up in DS2's bedroom ever since as it had door-play and posting-play and was satisfyingly chunky. I think tibni and insanityscratching our children may have similar taste.

Thank you insanityscratching. Thinking of new ideas for xmas is so difficult. We have the safe options dvds, colouring, vehicles with doors but then I start to struggle.

We have the big playmobil school that has a doorbell and doors, but they are not electronic so no good for you unreasonableismyname.

Actually, correct me if I'm wrong, but Lego mindstorms uses motors and such. Post your question on one of the Lego forums like eurobrick in the mindstorms section and see if anyone can help. You might be able to make a Lego house for him!

Yep, we have the older version of that postbox from ELC. My parents have an external postbox and the highlight of ds visit is "keybox" - he fetches the keys and loves to check it. I did think of putting one up in the conservatory for him but thought of what he might post and the subsequent cleaning put me off.

Safe is going on the xmas list too, thank you.

I'm a bit wary of the lego/DIY electronics approach because he does tend to play with toys to destruction. He's not rough with things, just a bit repetitive. I will check out preschool/baby toys as there are things with buttons to open doors (and although it wouldn't close and open and close and open) we might get away with that in conjunction with the excellent suggestion from insanityscratching above.

DD wants a Hello Kitty toy like her best friend. Her best friend has gone back to Sweden till after Christmas. The Hello Kitty toy is, from the primitive game of Give Us a Clue that I've been playing with my 3yo, a big soft toy. Have you any idea how many of those there are? But it must be exact Hmm

tibni hope ds really loves the house, it always made my day when I found something ds (asd) liked.

We have ELC's plastic 'pop it in the post' postbox. It says 18m+ but she's 11 months and loves it.
