Salt Dough Decorations

I've found recipes for salt dough decorations, i have a quick decorating question. Can you just use standard kids paints to decorate and leave it at that or do you need to varnish them?

I've made them before and just used kids paint. They would probably look a lot nicer varnished though!

Just googled it and they look like fun! Never seen them before. Going to do it this weekend with DS1.

Thanks for the idea!

We just use pva glue to coat them after painting. It dries completly clear and is cheaper than varnish, especially when they only last for the one christmas.
We also mix the pva with glitter and do a glittery finish all over some of them.

We made some two years ago and varnished them with proper varnish, you can get a cheapish pot in Wilkinsons - and they are still going strong.
We didn't paint them - left them natural.

Grin loving it Queen - copying that idea too!

I saw this fingerprint salt dough Christmas decoration on Pinterest which I'm going to try and do. I'm not sure how neat the result will be, but it will be fun trying :)

Can you use poster paint or do you need acrylic paint?

bytheMoonlight · 22/11/2011 21:58

That would look amazing hanging on the tree browneyesblue.

Is it painted white and then a varnish finish? How on earth did they do that writing? Looks really good!!!!

How long would that last? Be nice to keep it forever

FleetwoodandFairycakes · 22/11/2011 22:03

We have done some and used normal kids' paint for some, metallic paint for others (which looks super cool) and holographic glitter over all of them Grin. Am so enjoying my daughter being old enough to do Christmas activities now! (she is nearly 2).

browneyesblue · 22/11/2011 22:08

I have no idea how they did the writing, so am hoping to get away with just putting the year. I've never done these before, so am going to try painting it white, then painting the prints, then varnishing.

If it looks a little 'rustic', it will add to its charm Wink

[MOUTH WIDE OPEN AND LOVING THE TREE] cannot wait for the weekend!

Since the summer hols I have stepped away from pin interest (busy with work and nursery) but you've got me hooked again browneyesblue

It seems to have changed though and it's not so easy to find things as it was

TryingToBeTidier · 22/11/2011 22:43

Tree amazing....

WelshMoth · 23/11/2011 06:14

I fancy doing the salt dough but love the natural look. Does anyone know what would happen if I baked fairy dust (ultra fine glitter) INTO the dough mix, instead of painting it on afterwards?

buzzgirly · 23/11/2011 09:05

This will probably sound like a very random question, but do you think I could send some salt dough decs to Australia? DD and I are going to make some next week, and would like to send some out to my best mate, but know that customs is funny about food stuff going out. Waht do you think?

Thanks

BoysBoysBoysAndMe · 23/11/2011 09:08

Yeah no problem. Just make sure you wrap them well enough for you to be happy to drop them from standing up height when they're wrapped. IYSWIM.

Worked with Customs a few years ago, and would have been fine then.

buzzgirly · 23/11/2011 10:07

Hi boys thanks for that, will wrap them up well!!
